Hi All,
I've recently procured a new laptop and I would like to transfer all my files, data, movies, pictures etc. from the old to the new. Both are non Mac laptops.
Using my portable hard drive will take a long time.
Is there a quicker method via direct connect, like firewire or HDMI something like that?
I am quite technologically inept. Any and all attempts at guidance in this matter will be graciously accepted and rewarded with two-fingers of Old Overholt, neat.

Network cable between the two or use rfc 1149. Our pull the drive out of the old laptop, but a usb to sata adapter and clone the drive using some free cloning software.

Nice. Guess I'll go the network cable route.
I have a sata adapter but don't fancy digging into my old laptop just yet.
Thanks for the info!

If you're a non techie, just do it the slow way with your external drive. You have the added benefit of creating a backup of all your data on the ext drive while you do it - something most non-techies don't think is important until all their data is stuck on a fcked disk that they can't access.

Many thanks for your timely replies gents. If any of you should desire to collect your just deserts, I shall be encamped at Elephant Bar at 5:15 this eve. You'll find me ensconced, womb-like, on the run-smooth pleather sofa betwixt the window and third support column.

Since you're a smart guy, you just connect whichever device you used for your backups to your new laptop and copy all the items to your new laptop.
And if if you do not have a device like that, your new laptop is a good reason to get one, usually a 16 GB memory stick does, unless you want to backup videos.
