Thank you in advance for your time.
I am finishing my degree online with my GI Bill and traveling. Is the internet reliable enough that outages aren't common and of the major type?
Thanks again for your help.
Is Internet in PP sufficent for taking online courses?

Depends how media heavy your course is. If standard def Skype video calling is about the level you need then you should be fine. If you need multiple HD streams then you'll struggle.
There are only 10 kinds of people in the world; those who understand binary and ...

Should be sufficient as long as it's downloading/uploading course-ware or watching/listening recorded video's. Any live-sessions might be affected by the lovely infrastructure here, yes even Skype will have troubles on bad days. To counter this also apply for mobile internet, it is usually sufficient as backup solution for Skype and other voip activity. Power-outages are less frequent but do occur every now and then, more so during the hot season.
I am currently contemplating if I should undertake a certain certification which requires VPN access for training and a 24/hour exam. I might hop over to our house in Thailand for a few months...

If the second; I will go for OSCP certification. This is a cyber-security course teaching offensive security techniques. Or what most people know as "hacking". It contains a vpn environment which mimics a real corporate network with various security flaws. The exam is a scaled down version.
"The OSCP challenges the students to prove they have a clear and practical understanding of the pen-testing process and life-cycle through an arduous twenty-four (24) hour certification exam." http://www.offensive-security.com
I remember you were looking into IT study and work opportunities. If you ever need guidance on specializing in security let me know. Sorry, no job offers.

You'll be okay. At times it was very slow accessing the library and downloading ebooks and journals etc but nothing too painful. If you travel though, you may have access problems. I wasn't permitted to access the university system in China.Jefe wrote:Thank you in advance for your time.

Good luck with your studies!
Thank you everyone for your replies and info!
I met an experienced ESL guy with all the bells and whistles (CELTA/DELTA/MA etc.) who had a lot of experience. Some of the points he very unselfishly helped me with was to spin me up on some tech/IT stuff, such as programs that can accelerate your internet speed, using IPHONE type devices as backups/supplements etc.
A very decent guy who I didn't ask for help. He heard at a local place I was looking at ESL work after schoo1l and waved me down to have a coffee. I paid for a couple coffees and he refused to take $10 for a follow up hour sometime, but he did eat some of my appetizer, so I felt better.
Thank you guys. I had really bad experiences on most ESL forums. This one is informative and a bit of fun too.

Good choice. Stay far away from the CEH BS and any HR department that requires it.kiiniaew wrote:I will go for OSCP certification.

Do people actually watch online courses? I thought they were all a scam where you just pay money and get the degree whether you do any work or not.

I think there is a lot more to it than just "watching." You may be surprised at the number of prestigious universities that offer courses online.gavinmac wrote:Do people actually watch online courses? I had my reservations about the online college thing too. I went to a private college for just under two years right after the Army and my money ran out before I could complete a degree (worst program the Army ever had. Naturally, that was when I signed up). I continued on and finished with the National Guard and got access to some more funds after retirement, so I figured why not?
My experience has been very good. I believe that in either a brick and mortar school, or online it's more about what you make of it than anything else. You get the text and assignments. He who does his homework wins more or less.
The methodology is surprisingly good in some ways. One weekly task is that you get some short 500 word essay problem to write out each week as part of your homework and post it in a forum where the other students have put theirs up. You then reply to two other students and the professors feedback/follow ups. Looking at anyone elses work in my first school would have been an honor violation/cheating. Here, I have picked up a lot of techniques from other students that improve my performance for example.
The methods of delivery are surprisingly good.
Online schools are becoming a big thing in the US and much more widely accepted. Particularly for the working adult who can take night classes from the PC.
And as you know, it's all about what your goal is. For a basic ESL Job (it's not a career thing for me. It's a part time retirement job to keep me a little busy as I travel from place to place the next 5 plus years) it meets most places requirements. At least the ones I am looking for. And unlike my youth, I am enjoying school at this age. It's a benefit I am grateful for. I will be grateful when it's done too. lol.
Here is the background of some of my recent professors:
Maritime Law: Retired US Coast Guard JAG Officer. Currently in charge of a US Region for Dept. of Homeland Security
Oceanography: Former US Marine Machine Gunner in Vietnam. Became and Navy Hard Hat Diver and got a PHD in Marine Biology.
And so on. I had one really bad teacher and they fired him immediately at the end of the semester. Most of them have been better than what I got in the private college.
Have a good day over there.
