Help needed: Macbook Data crisis
Help needed: Macbook Data crisis
I think I just might have lost all of my work files on my work laptop.
It's a MacBook Pro (late 2011), running OS X El Capitan (version 10.11.2).
The Apple HDD is a 750GB SATA disk and was partitioned between the startup drive (named Macintosh HD, 100GB) and my work drive (~650GB), in which I stored all my work files.
I was working on files from that drive yesterday evening but when I sought to use files from it this morning, it wasn't showing in Finder.
I opened Disk Utility to check on the HDD and it showed Macintosh HD disk only. The rest was labeled "untitled."
Now i think I inadvertently, through Disk Utility, erased that portion, unmounted it and re-mounted it as it now appears as "untitled" disk and is empty...
So is there a way I can recover my work files?
I have a backup of my documents but it is quite a few weeks old...
Any help in recovering from this fuck up will be greatly appreciated.

I'm no pro but if the data hasn't been written over then it should all still be there.

I've had success with recuva on a pc. They don't do a mac version but there should be mac alternatives out there. It was much simpler than I thought it was going to be.
Thanks for your feedback, guys.
I've Googled a bit and two data recovery softwares showed up. Just not sure how trustworthy and effective they are.
Anyone knows a foolproof free data recovery software for Mac?

OK I'm a bit late, but there is a free prog that recovers from bad disks for OS X.
That is, if you don't hear any clicks or grinding noises.
You can recover up to 2 gigs of data for free.
EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard for Mac

Good luck

^ thanks for the feedback and software recommendation.
I'm running Disk Drill's deep scan and it shows my files, alright. But there's more than a hundred gigs worth of files. DD won't recover the files under a free, basic licence.
I've seen another freeware that also allows recovery of 1GB of data only.
And there's one, Lazesoft, that boasts of having no volume limits on data recovery, at no cost. Of course, if it sounds too good to be true... I get wary.
There are ten softwares listed here:

Anybody with first-hand experience with them freewares?

Why, it's what I do. Could recover from OS in minutes for you. It's probably not even what you think.
I said have a look. Not poke around. I never said I would stick my disk drill in and do a deep scan, but if you want me to ... we could talk about it. It's Christmas, honey.

You need to go back to OS X Rehabb. The later versions are unstable.Joon wrote: It's a MacBook Pro (late 2011), running OS X El Capitan (version 10.11.2).

Do you have external drives to recover the data to? Whatever software you use, don't try to recover it to the laptop directly. Ideally, image the drive to one external HDD so you at least have a safe copy of what is currently on the laptop.
Then recover from the laptop onto a second external HDD.

bb's recommendation is by far the safest procedure. I don't use Apple but I did some searching on Apple's help forum and found this:bipolar bear wrote:Do you have external drives to recover the data to? ProSoft software is not free. If you want to use free software, then use 2 external HDD's and try it. Worst case scenario it fails but you still have your original image on an external HDD to try something else with.
Good luck.
