Good providers store your password in such a (encrypted) way even they can not read it, only overwrite it.YaTingPom wrote:It doesn't matter if it's difficult to hack if they get a list!salvajeuno wrote:Two simple habits: create difficult to hack passwords and change frequently. I use a password manager and every site has a unique, hard to hack, password. Except Khmer440, but then I only use the password here and nowhere else.
And I bet very few people change their password regularly. Usually only when they forget it!
Pstebin dump and your e-mail passwords
The Pastebin list looks like the result of phishing. If you fall for phishing it doesn't matter how strong your password is or where you store it.
Storing passwords in a centralized system sounds like a terrible idea. LastPass was hacked a couple of years ago.

There are open source password managers that don't send your passwords to someone elses computer in "the cloud".Hanno wrote:Never affected me. And I do not see any other solution unless you have the memory of an elephant.

Passwords are easy to remember and hard to to hack.
I use password 1234 and no one has ever hacked my account.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Pretty much everything is in the cloud anyway. The only way around that is to become a hermit.Alexandra wrote:There are open source password managers that don't send your passwords to someone elses computer in "the cloud".Hanno wrote:Never affected me. LastPass users had their email addresses and encrypted master passwords stolen in a 2015 intrusion. http://www.forbes.com/sites/katevinton/ ... 4650845a66Hanno wrote:Pretty much everything is in the cloud anyway. The only way around that is to become a hermit.
LastPass users were at risk until a vulnerability allowing account and password theft was patched in 2016. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/07/27 ... it_a_site/ And another vulnerability a month later. https://labs.detectify.com/2016/07/27/h ... passwords/
Password managers like LastPass create a false sense of security. Evidently vulnerabilities are discovered enabling compromise of *all* passwords stored in the password manager itself regardless if they are unique per site or not. Password managers become a new target. LastPass promotes the psychological effect that you don't need to change passwords as often because the mere belief that it is more safe relaxes you.
How many of the affected LastPass users do you think lost their wallets or credit cards the past 5 years? If LastPass users had just written down their passwords on post-it notes kept in their wallets they would statistically have been better off.

Now that is really safe. Maybe keep the ATM PIN there as well, nestled next to the card?

Welcome to the internet young Paduan. These things happen. Now a breach of THIS site would be a different issue.
Shit, maybe I'll just go back to paper and snail mail for my financial matters, they aren't that complicated.
I've never been hacked that I can tell. The only times I lost money was with a credit card purchase and an ATM skim, both in Thailand (of course). Both times the banks made me whole.

If you don't know where you're going, any road takes you there.

Spare a thought for the idiot(s) amongst who got inspired by this thread to manage passwords better.
Used a password utility and changed password to a unique string then clicked on cancel instead of save on the utility and ended up having no record of the new password...
That person may have had to create a new 440 profile as a result.
Thanks PPP, Hanno et al.

I said it before and I'll say it again:
BlessThe saddest part of this quote is that their accounts would be much safer if they chose a short single Khmer word (written with Khmer script) for a password.
