is there fast, stable and reasonably-priced WIFI/internet in Cambodia?
First off, hello everyone long time no see haha!
I haven't posted on here in a long time. I was living in China before, but now I am working and living in Japan.
I have an online company and things are going well so far. If I'm able to continue to make the money I am making now or make more, I want to sometimes travel and live in Cambodia 2 or 3 months out of the year. I have been in love with the culture and environment ever since my first trip to Thailand and Laos about 6 years ago.
Onto my question, due to having an online job, I would obviously need constant access to internet. How is the Wifi, internet there?
Another question I had is sometimes I need to make late night calls (sometimes as late as until 11pm) that can last up to an hour or so...would this be an issue? Would I most likely get noise complaints from neighbors? Have the police called on me? Have some guy trying to kick my door in? etc...
I would make sure not to talk too loud of course, but are the walls like paper over there or are they thick? The walls are paper-thin here in Japan and in China the walls were solid concrete, which were pretty much sound proof...I miss that.

You're asking if you would be too noisy speaking on the phone? In Cambodia?
Maybe you should stay in Japan.
It's not the internet connection you have to worry about but the constant power cuts.

Just to be clear, you are aware that Cambodia and Thailand and Laos all have different cultures and atmospheres, correct?whiteboy wrote:If I'm able to continue to make the money I am making now or make more, I want to sometimes travel and live in Cambodia 2 or 3 months out of the year. Do you still have all of the concerns from last year? I'd recommend visiting first and then decide if you'd like to make the move or not.
But to answer your question, you can live in squalor with no WIFI, or in a Penthouse Suite with the best amenities in the world, and everything in between.
To be more specific you can easily find a fairly stable fast Wi-Fi connection, and late calls won't be an issue. 4g is cheap and can be used as backup for the Wi-Fi should it be down.

What about times like now when the electricity seems to be down right across the city?
Been out with me in Phnom Penh Thmey for past 30 mins.

This is a relative rarity nowadays in downtown PP. The East coast in the U.S. loses power more frequently than my home here. But, that's why we have large generators here that automatically click on, right?ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:What about times like now when the electricity seems to be down right across the city?

I work online and use Smart G3. it works quite good for me. Coverage is fine and speed is ok. Can easily Skype call. Comparable cheap also.
Yes, I realize that they are specifically different but my meaning is obviously the tropical and cultural feel of SEA in general. Thailand, Laos and Cambodia have a lot more in common with each other than say...Japan.Miguelito wrote:Just to be clear, you are aware that Cambodia and Thailand and Laos all have different cultures and atmospheres, correct?whiteboy wrote:If I'm able to continue to make the money I am making now or make more, I want to sometimes travel and live in Cambodia 2 or 3 months out of the year. As of now, I really like my stable life here in Japan. It would just be nice to stay in Cambodia for a short while each year (nothing permanent) as a getaway and a place to work away from home for a while. My allergies and hay fever drive me crazy here in Japan so much so that I'm planning to have allergic rhinitis nasal laser surgery. My allergies don't bother me in tropical environments due to the moisture, which is great.
Well, this is a reasonable question to ask for someone who has never been to Cambodia lol.YaTingPom wrote:You're asking if you would be too noisy speaking on the phone? In Cambodia?

Ok, so based on your response...I won't worry about it at all. I will do my late night calls with not a care in the world. I will keep my fingers crossed to ward off those power cuts though.
Are these blackouts a daily, weekly, or monthly problem?
It would suck to be doing my online job and have a power cut...but I assume people with online companies go through this all the time there? I would lose customers if this kept happening.

I assume you probably live in Cambodia as do the people replying to this post, but do you know if there are reasonable visitor options for WIFI with hotspots around the downtown area?Rune wrote:I work online and use Smart G3. it works quite good for me. Here in Japan there are free WIFI services for visitors that let you connect from these hotspots if you provide an email.
