reconfiguring/resetting password for router
I have inherited an internet connection with router and modem. Laptop security tells me that my router is not configured correctly - I have a default password and it is a security risk.
I have entered the default passwords and can't remember what I need to change where in order to fix the issue.
some options are:
Under OPERATION MODE menu
Operation Mode Configuration, where it says:
You may configure the operation mode suitable for you environment.
Gateway:
The first ethernet port is treated as WAN port. The other ethernet ports and the wireless interface are bridged together and are treated as LAN ports.
AP Client:
The wireless apcli interface is treated as WAN port, and the wireless ap interface and the ethernet ports are LAN ports.
currently the gateway is selected. do i leave it like that?
Under ADMINISTRATION/Management settings
there is the option to change the default username and password for the router. Do I just change it there and that's it? Done?
Under WIRELESS/Security
It is currently set at WPA2-PSK
The current network password (for when I connect to the wifi etc.) is there under Pass Phrase (I'd like to change that. If I change it here, do I need to change it elsewhere in other settings?)
Oh... and in what order should I execute password changes? Wireless security first (pass phrase) or administration/management first (username and password for router).

There should be a pinhole to reset the router somewhere, usually on the back.
Then just start fresh.
Then just start fresh.

i was wary of doing that as I didn't want to be without any network while I am trying to prep for next week. I don't have instructions of what to do when 'starting fresh'.YaTingPom wrote:There should be a pinhole to reset the router somewhere, usually on the back.

Unless you know what you are doing don't start messing around with it.
I've had so many friends mess up their settings and call me to come to try to fix it. Some times I've been able to help sometimes not.

ok, well hopefully someone can at least tell me if i just change the username and password for the router and everything will work fine. That way my internet is more secure. I am not able to get new internet right now so I am stuck with what I have.

manufactures each have different procedures and sometimes the same manufacture will have different procedures for each model.

If you change the username and password for he router then all that will change is username 'admin' and password 'admin' changing to your new settings
If you change the wireless network name and password then you will see a new wireless network and will require a new password to log on.
If you change the username and password for the router to connect to your internet provider then you are buggered unless you know what it should be. You need to contact your provider to get original details again.
Does the wireless network work at the minute?
I'm not sure where you are seeing the warning message at the minute.
I'd guess it is suggesting you change from WEP to WPA but can't be sure. I can't really make sense of your description.
Wireless settings isn't really something you should play with unless you know what you are doing. If it works I suggest it's better left alone until you have a visitor or friend who is proficient in setting up networks.

That. Change default Username and password. Also do not use WEP as it is very easy to crack. Disable WPS also as that is just as easy. Use WPA2 and do not use simple keys that would be found in a dictionary.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:

I would search up the user manual for that particular router and print it if possible. However, otherwise, save it, and then reset your modem. Then, using a cable, plug your modem into your computer. Usually, theres a URL you can type in that will take you to the settings of that modem. You should be able to proceed from there.
Cannot you also have a backup of a phone that you can tether JIC?
I've sort of done this before.

When I had a similar problem a few months back (I'd forgotten the WiFi password), I just brought the router into the service provider and they got a technician to reset it with a new password.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:You need to contact your provider to get original details again.

Resetting a router is perfectly fine EXCEPT if need a username and password to log in to the provider, for instance I was using Metfone FTTH. If you lose or you have to call up and get the info again. If it's just plug and play into the modem then you can reset and set it up as you want.
Also what modem/router is it?

Perhaps call your ISP for assistance, and to talk you through it? When I purchased a new router and had an issue with setting it up, I was able to get Digi on the phone and I gave them the model and then they talked me through it all. The hardest part was getting them on the phone, the rest was easy.
Yes the default password and user name differs depending on the router. Can't figure why you don't just download a manual and/or look on their website. Just changing the user name and password is the first thing the router checks but once you do log on you may find other settings that differ from what the previous owner had.ThePeck wrote:Resetting a router is perfectly fine EXCEPT if need a username and password to log in to the provider, for instance I was using Metfone FTTH. It's really very easy to do much easier than setting up an account on K440.
