Big Brother is Watching.....
any advice and or tips on an inexpensive surveillance system?
i have a small restaurant/bar and want to get rid of our night security man.
would need 2 out door cameras that should be highly visible as a deterrent so highly weather proof and 2 inside cameras for a small interior of about
70M2.
don't have any support yet, such as computer or laptop w/monitor.
was wondering how much a simple entry level system costs.
thanks K440

About $400 would get you a good, 4 camera setup at Pacific Systems, a few years ago. Includes the "computer" that records and controls everything. Can be connected to a cheap tv or monitor. Many places sell many different ones now. Can't you build one out of scrap wood and metal?
I am sooooo very sorry if you can't understand or appreciate my sarcastic facetiousness.

thanks for the advice.
unfortunately, with all the Vietnamese woodworker shops around me, a barking dog is more of dinner bell then an alarm bell.
and yes, i could whittle and weld something up that would act as a dummy system, but at the rates i charge it's cheaper to buy one that can actually record something.
was hoping for under $500 with a small laptop so pretty close.
cheerios

You won't need a laptop for this. Is your ancient cracked MacBook not working again?
Here's a link to Pacific:http://pacific.com.kh/turning.php?IDAut ... Y%20CAMERA
I'm not recommending them. Haven't dealt with them since that still beautiful bar you built 4(?) years ago. Hopefully others can give better advice.
When are you coming into Pig Penh? Stocking up on more Belgian beer too?

You can buy webcams connected to your home WiFi that you can manage from your smartphone.
Any shop will be selling them for 30/40 USD for the entry level ones. Some of them are made for outdoors too with night vision features.
They can record videos on sdcard or take pictures whenever there's something moving.
They will need a power plug nearby, although you can purchase some running on batteries.

Why would I care? I'm Khmer
Something you might want to think about is what happens when the power gets cut, will you have a UPS (battery backup) for all the cameras and the device you're recording on? How will you get power to the cameras.
A simple way to fix this is to use a switch with POE (power over ethernet) facility such as this Tenda TEF1109P-8-63W 9-Port 10/100Mbps Desktop PoE Switch with 8 Port POE about $70 locally.
I've been using HikVision IP based cameras, they come in various prices from $60 up. DS-2CD2142FWD-I They're well built and have a good reputation, they are available locally but cost 10% more but you get a warranty. As none of mine have broken I don't know how good the warranty is.
There is a free software package from HikVision that you can run on a small pc that will record video and audio if your cameras support it, and send you notifications when things occur, such as a camera getting disconnected, mov in an area you want to watch etc. A $150 PC would handle this well enough.
Yes you can view the cameras remotely if you want.

PSC Computers on 184 near Monivong do a good four HikVision camera system for $250 including some free cable. Installation is about $10 per camera. It includes a 1Tb recorder. And they can arrange the smartphone app and viewing.
The quality is very good.

No upskirt cameras? Piss poor planning, as usual.
See Homesteader? I knew others like dv8 and youngwilly would have better advice.

Is he allowed to post uncensored, unpixelated clips on your forum? Please say yes!Miguelito wrote:^^ Oh the things I am sure he has seen.

unfortunately, i had to do a lot of research on this subject prior to our departure from the US a few weeks ago. we had an intruder overnight, who walked into our house, somehow (no signs of forcible entry), and stole our bags with some important stuff from the first floor while we were sleeping downstairs. probably not a bad outcome, considering other possibilities..
you first need to figure out what exactly you want from your security system. do you want a lot of footage, or do you want a non-false alert when somebody is actually breaching your premises (but before she walks out with that expensive espresso maker).
if you don't have a lot of doors/windows, maybe door/window sensors with loud alarm and a text alert is the way to go.
if you want cameras, make sure the areas outside that will be covered don't have a lot of light changes (passing car lights, tree shadows, etc), or you will get a LOT of false positives. happened to my first two purchases, but i figured the project will be complicated so made sure i had full return/exchange policy at the store i was shopping.
i finally settled on Nest, which is probably too expensive here (as it is there). i heard good things about Hikvision outdoor, as somebody mentioned.
finally, the cops who came that night, gave two suggestions: good bolt lock, and/or a dog.
good luck!
