Any machine will benefit from an SSD and as much RAM as the (lower of what the) motherboard and OS will support. You'll have to decide for yourself whether putting the money towards a new machine would be a better use for it.
There are only 10 kinds of people in the world; those who understand binary and ...
An SSD and ubuntu helped my 6+ year old laptop boot in 10 seconds.
80 bucks would probably get you a 240gb sata SSD and another 4gb of ram on Kampuchea Krom, so definitely worth it if it can take it.

Eighty bucks or just a bit more would get you a whole better not so old computer though so I'm not sure there's much point in that.epidemiks wrote:

A sub $300 used laptop will probably be slower than what he's got already, and still need an SSD and more ram.
SSDs start around $50, and with a clean OS install would be enough to revive an old machine.
Chanthracomputer has 480GB SSD $59, they also list 1TB for $130
Make sure you motherboard will support the connector of the SSD though.... Most will use SATA Express.
A SATA express controller can also control SATA 1/2 drives, but not the other way around.
