International Phone Call Problem
International Phone Call Problem
Hi All,
I’ve phoned abroad regularly for a long time now and with no problems. Last night, I called abroad as usual and connected, but although I could hear the other end clearly, they couldn’t hear me at all!
I was told it’s a network problem. Then I went back to the place where I bought the phone, they checked and it worked fine- but that’s a local call.
Anyway, I thought, “If it’s a network problem, maybe they just got it fixed when I was at the store. But, back at home, same thing- I connect, I hear them, they don’t hear me at all.
I’m using Smart. I’ve changed nothing about the way I connect abroad. So, how can this be?
It’s an important call. Anyone?
Thanks.

WhatsApp, Messenger, Google talk, telegram (?), Viber, line. Plus all those I don't know about.
I can't imagine anyone having real long lasting comms issues.

If calling a business, use Skype, dial a normal phone number rather than the options from logos that need the other end to be on the same app.

Viber has 'Viber out' option. Its super cheap. 5$ for hundreds of minutes to many countries and it doesn't expire. You can call out through the app to any number in the world.ReasonstobefearfulP3 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 15, 2021 8:43 amIf calling a business, use Skype, dial a normal phone number rather than the options from @logos that need the other end to be on the same app.

For the last 3 - 4 months I have had the same issue with smart.
I dial, I hear the ringtone then when the call is connected. Nothing.
I try again. Nothing.
3rd or 4th Time works, by which time the person you are called thinks your taking the piss or just an imbecile.
Smart unable to trace the problem. Wankers.

Harry Monk, sorry to hear you’re having/had the same problem I have now. Interesting to know that by the 3rd or 4th time it works. And that I’m not the only one who has had this issue. Did you solve it?
Yes, Smart should get it together.
Thanks to the rest of you, too, logos all of those options you listed sound great, I’ve never used any of them, though…
I’m trying to contact a business, so I don’t know if I can use those ways to connect.
I have to.

Skype is dying. Move now. Telegram is OK for international calls, I call Australia 3 times a week. Bit spotty on voice calls during inclement weather, but perfect otherwise.ReasonstobefearfulP3 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 15, 2021 8:43 amIf calling a business, use Skype, dial a normal phone number rather than the options from @logos that need the other end to be on the same app.
OK, thanks again. BTW, does anyone use a ‘mainstream’ carrier, E.g. Metfone, etc., and calls internationally, regularly and no problems? I never had a problem with Smart before, but maybe times are changing. If I learn anything worth posting, I will.

I use metfone, calls are very cheap if you sign up to the 3 cents per minute.

ReasonstobefearfulP3, Thanks. Call cost isn’t the issue… connectivity is!
Seriously, why not just use Telegram? Free. Reliable during decent weather.
Let me describe my config, works perfectly.
In the past, I used Smart, initially it worked fine and costs were relatively low. Later on, costs to .eu went up significantly AND the connection quality went down the drain. I did spend roughly USD 100 / month on calling costs.
Now, I do have my "own" linux server in .eu with a fixed IP, running a free low-entry 3CX switchbox. On that switchbox, I do have a local .eu VOIP provider account active. Costs in total some EUR 10 a month, where the linux box is multi-purpose.
From my smartphone/laptop, I do use a VPN to connect to a VPN node in .my or .sg. VPN costs some USD 6 per month. That same VPN gives me decent Internet speeds to everywhere in the world, even in the evenings, since it does bypass the .vn Internet bottlenecks.
Then use Linphone over the VPN to VOIP-connect to the 3CX switchbox.
And then add the local .eu calling costs.
This setup gives an excellent connection / low voice delay quality. The other sides are always surprised, I am in Asia, because of the hardly (if any) noticeable voice delays.
The only drawback is, you need to manage the linux server and 3CX switchbox, which is not that difficult, once the initial configuration is done. This can be "hosted" in the cloud, though does make the whole significantly more expensive.
Telegram would be cheaper, though does require the other party to have Telegram as well, and the voice/video delays can be significantly.

No big deal. The call I want to make is to a business, not personal, so I *assumed* most businesses just use phone, fax and postal mail.bargain basement wrote: ↑Wed Jul 21, 2021 3:25 pmSeriously, why not just use Telegram? Free. Reliable during decent weather.
But, why not dig into Telegram? Free and reliable is nice. *Secure* has to be in the mix, too, as it’s biz… End to end encryption?
Thanks
