What are you on about now? Who are these "three personalities"? I only have one account here.
It's amazing how you think you are posting some great personal observations when all you are actually doing is parroting US propaganda with zero evidence.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Ah there is the PC bleeding-heart card...the only way for people like you to try to take the moral high ground. Amazing to hear someone beating the drum for the poor, racially attacked Chinese...FFS.Winnie the Pooh wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 7:44 pmAh there is the racism card.
Just bypass the fact that Chinese only love Chinese. Try going into all the lovely shops owned and run by Chinese in SNV... They won't even serve you. A real shop that sells real things like building materials etc., not just a drink in a bottle.
Watch how they treat the Khmer like rubbish in their own country. If China had it's way there would only be Chinese on the planet.
Chinese laugh at stupid PC Barangs like you.
Don't mention the Giant Panda in the room.

Certainly there have been strategic investments globally by China that enhances their naval capacity. The issue with Ream is that it is tucked into the Gulf, hemmed in by nations that are not natural allies. Hence any ships harbouring there would risk being port-bound in any conflict.Winnie the Pooh wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 7:44 pmAh there is the racism card.
If you look at the big picture a base in Cambodia is beneficial to China:
Slightly oudated:

When operational they can secure their shipping lanes all the way from China to the Mediterranean. I believe a port in Myanmar is missing. The Malacca Strait is crucial to shipping so they would be able to exert control over it from these 2 ports (Cambodia/Myanmar).
They are not really doing anything different than it's rival: the USA. Maybe more covert but the end result will be the same: military bases scattered around the globe to protect their interests.

The newly established facilities on the Spratlys offer significantly greater strategic value.
There may be an argument for Ream's use as a naval intelligence post, however that would require significant radar facilities that are not present.
@Marvin I think you have misunderstood my point (I am not a native English speaker) What you write is well known to me and we agree on that. I was under the impression that these views were labelled as "racism". I'd like to call them realistic
@Prahok yes that is certainly true but maybe this is what they are able to get at the current time. Not sure how well Brunei / China relationships are. All other nations near the Strait would likely decline to facilitate a base.
It also remains to be seen what countries here would do if China decided to send a big fleet through their waters onwards to for example India/Africa. Sure they violate your waters but do you dare to pick a fight over it?

I’ve actually kind of experienced that in PP. although it wasn’t that they didn’t want to serve me, they tried but they couldn’t speak Khmer or English - and my Chinese doesn’t lend itself to much more than hello.Marvin wrote: ↑Thu Jan 27, 2022 11:17 amAh there is the PC bleeding-heart card...the only way for people like you to try to take the moral high ground. It didn’t annoy me, I was just intrigued that they were happy enough to do business here without being able communicate with the majority of potential customers.
With the many reports of Chinese on Chinese violence I struggle to agree with your ‘Chinese only love Chinese’ point,
It seems to me this is what powerful countries do and the history of empire and expanding influence hasn't been pretty. It would be ingenuous to think China wouldn't do the same as the British and then the Americans did. Having worked in and out of China for years, I don't like the idea of Chinese influence because it doesn't suit me and my values. That's life.

This. China is now the only superpower in the world after America’s mental breakdown in recent years. At least China is doing it in a relatively soft way. The history of China over the centuries has been one of consolidation of what it considers its territory - the Middle Kingdom. Whoever cited Taiwan as an example of Chinese aggression needs to pick up a history book now and again.

Sorry for the misunderstanding...I re-read your post, I get it now.Pooh Bear wrote: ↑Thu Jan 27, 2022 1:08 pm@Marvin I think you have misunderstood my point (I am not a native English speaker) What you write is well known to me and we agree on that. Why do you people always seek to insult everyone? Why are you always so angry and bitter?
Yes, sadly, America has spent the last few years eating itself from the inside. The decline to those of us who love America from afar is palpable. It’s also sad. China is single minded in its aspirations and objectives. It knows what it is and what it wants.
America? No. Not anymore. The country is weak, ignorant and has a ridiculous sense of its worth which few others now agree with.
Pretty sure China has learned that warmongering doesn't suit their aims. Economic leverage makes more friends, and improves support from the indigenous Chinese population, a greater percentage of which benefits from the US-MIC model. I'm pretty sure they would have done it, though, if the glaring example of America wasn't in everybody's face (except US politicians, it seems)RobW wrote: ↑Thu Jan 27, 2022 3:41 pmIt seems to me this is what powerful countries do and the history of empire and expanding influence hasn't been pretty.
