Thailand will not pay ฿28m to Cambodia for SEA Games broadcast rights
Cambodia is asking US$800,000 (~28 million baht) for the live broadcast rights to the SEA Games, which it will be hosting in May, but none of the participating countries, including Thailand, are willing to pay, claiming that the price is too high.
An informed source at the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), said that they cannot afford the price, because it does not know from where the money will come. They will, however, try to negotiate with their Cambodian counterparts to reducer the fee, adding that it is not known which TV channels are interested in buying the rights.
In the end, he said, the SAT may have to seek help from Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, in his capacity as chairman of the National Olympic Committee of Thailand, and the money may have to come from National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission’s research and development fund, because the Sea Games are one of the seven sporting events classified in the “Must Have” category.
The source pointed out that, normally, the host of the SEA Games charges a token fee for the live broadcast rights, citing the case of Vietnam, which charged only US$10,000, and the Philippines’ charge of US$5,000.
The source also referred to the case of Laos, when it hosted the SEA Games in 2009, which was the first time that the SEA Games Committee agreed to allow the host country to demand payment for live broadcast rights.
Laos asked for 11 million baht, but none of the participating countries paid, said the source, adding that, since then, no host country has tried to charge a fee of more than US$10,000, until now.

All of which suggests that this is a sporting event broadcasters accept no one is really interested in.

They are very interested, they just don't want to get scalped. Another example of local sports officials making themselves look like greedy twats and ruining any reputation they might have had. It also comes on the back of the nonsense about how the international kickboxing competitions should be named. Maybe one is older than the other, who cares? Just see who can win, all these semantics take away from the contest.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Good thing Cambodia already has great healthcare and education. This money is well spent!

The Kingdom will spend over $100 million in total to organise this year’s 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and 12th ASEAN Para Games, Prime Minister Hun Sen said as the SEA Games Organising Committee (CAMSOC) prepares to kick off its 100-day countdown to the biennial multi-sports extravaganza.
Speaking at a graduation ceremony for nearly 7,000 students from the Cambodian University for Specialties on January 23, Hun Sen said the Kingdom is also paying attention to security for the event and holding it responsibly beyond just winning medals.
“This is a big event which we need to spend a lot of funds on. China helped build Morodok Techo National Stadium and we also used our own budget to add to that construction and other facilities.
“In the past, I had said that we would be spending around $40 million per year. So, the preparation has been three years so far and now the total budget to be spent will be over $100 million. I don’t hide this fact,” he said.

Drove past the stadium today and the surrounding roads in/out are all still under construction, trucks everywhere. The road is flat & nice, but you wouldn't guess for 100 years that a "major" sporting event will be there in a few weeks time. Our local chums can be very quick when they get their act together, but looks a bit dicey to me.

Phnom Penh (VNA) - Cambodia will inaugurate a sports village in April to welcome international sports delegations and athletes for the SEA Games 2023.Spigzy wrote: ↑Tue Feb 28, 2023 4:55 pmDrove past the stadium today and the surrounding roads in/out are all still under construction, trucks everywhere. The information was heard during an inspection visit of the country's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Tea Banh, President of the Cambodian SEA Games Organising Committee (CAMSOC) and the Cambodian ASEAN Para Games Organizing Committee (CAMAPGOC) to the sports village at Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh on February 28.
Tea Banh spoke highly of the good progress of the sports village and encouraged it to be finished by late March, according to Vath Chamroeun, Secretary General of CAMSOC.
Once ready, the sports village will be a nicely designed building with 1,700 rooms (each room is equipped with 1-5 beds) capable to accommodate from 6,000 to 7,000 athletes.
The sports village covers around eight hectares of land surface behind Morodok Techo National Stadium.
It will also serve as a museum for SEA Games related memories and materials to pass on to the next generations and for study and research purposes./.

Vice Chairman of the SEA Games Federation council, Chaipak Siriwat, is optimistic that Cambodia will agree to reduce the 28-million baht broadcast rights fee being demanded from Thailand when representatives of the Sports Authority of Thailand travel to Phnom Penh this week to negotiate.
Thailand has asked Cambodia to lower the fees, claiming that they are too high. The Cambodian side has claimed, however, that the fees were assessed based on market value in Thailand.
Since live broadcasts of the SEA Games, which are due start in May, are in the Thai regulator’s “Must Have” category and, therefore, must be broadcast for public viewing free of charge, the Sports Authority of Thailand is seeking funding from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, despite protests from various sectors, saying the public will not miss anything if the games are not broadcast live.
Additionally, Chaipak, who is also vice president of the National Olympic Committee of Thailand, said that the council of the SEA Games Federation has agreed to amend the SEA Games Charter to limit the number of the host nation’s local sports which can be included in the games, to prevent an advantage being gained by the host.

In a massive u-turn:
PHNOM PENH, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia is to provide free-of-charge live broadcast rights to local and overseas TV networks for the upcoming 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and the 12th ASEAN Para Games.
"The royal government decided not to charge for the Games broadcast rights for both local and foreign TVs," the Cambodia SEA Games Organizing Committee (CAMSOC) said in a statement.
The government will also give free admission to both local and overseas spectators, including opening and closing ceremonies as well as all competition events, the statement added.
The move was made during a cabinet meeting under the presidency of Prime Minister Samdech Samdech Techo Hun Sen, it said.
Cambodia will host the SEA Games for the first time in 64 years from May 5 to 17. The Morodok Techo National Stadium in a northern suburb of the capital Phnom Penh will be the centerpiece venue for official opening and closing ceremonies, and tournaments.
The Games will see athletes competing in 37 sports of more than 600 disciplines, according to CAMSOC.
Cambodia will also host the 12th ASEAN Para Games from June 3 to 9.

usually these games,(Olympics included) cost huge amounts of $$ and the broadcasting rights offset that
With everything free, where did the $$ come from?
Someone has DEEP pockets

"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer." HST
My hunch is the big man sees this as his parting gift to the nation. It would look a tad embarrassing if no one watches 90% empty stadiums on TV. The $100M is gone, there's no clawing it back. Just cheer away and enjoy the spectacle.

One wishes Cambodia all the best with the Games, the first time it will host them. But given the fact that this announcement came in the final days of March, less than five weeks before the start of the events on May 5, it’s clear that they were never intended to be free. Vietnam held the last iteration of the Games in 2021 and charged a symbolic $10,000 for live broadcasting rights. Reports suggest that Cambodia’s organizers were trying to charge Thailand around $800,000 for this year’s live broadcasts, so one presumes it was a similar price for other Southeast Asian countries. Thai media reported that “Thai sports authorities have indicated that they might not want to pay what they described as the excessive fee Cambodia planned to charge.”
In mid-March, the Cambodia SEA Games Organizing Committee (CAMSOC) took to Facebook to assert that it had sold around 50 percent of broadcasting rights for the SEA Games and Para Games. CAMSOC’s general secretary, Vath Chomroeun, a former wrestler, expanded on this to say that the rights had been sold to the national broadcasters of Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore. (Note that he only mentioned at the time that Timor-Leste, the region’s poorest country, would get free broadcasting rights.) Certainly on the broadcast rights issue, it appears CAMSOC had wanted to charge over the odds but was forced to roll back after it found it couldn’t.

In a similar fashion, I was charged to enter Kep at a roadblock. Not a lot, around $1.50 iirc, but I have since seen Khmers complaining about it on FB. The PM scolded the governor publicly, and the roadblock and tax are now history.
Anybody seeing a pattern here?
