Trafficking is a horror enough without the fake shock stories. That Meg Ryan piece the other day made me wretch...really.

95% of people back home still imagine Cambodia as being full of KR, starving people and a place where pedophiles can buy children for a dollar just outside the airport in PP. If they bothered accurately reporting the story, people won't listen.ken svay wrote: I guess the better the story,the more money raised.
I honestly don't know all these acronyms but if APESHIT is like APLE they have been feathering their nests with fundraising based on this Vietnam War era Western view, and the Cambodian government gets to play victim because it is the fault of rebels, the Vietnamese criminals, the USA, whatever.

My guess: no libel suit ( because the CD story is true.) Afesip makes slippery mealy mouthed statement neither affirming nor denying. Kristof writes about his hero. Meg Ryan speaks loudly and passionately. Somebody cries, 'but what of the children?' And all goes back to as it was, as if the story never happened. Kinda like when Somaly was caught lying about the kidnapping, etc.Uncle Monty wrote:I am assuming the Cambodia Daily has done it's homework otherwise the article would never have seen print. I could quote from that article to back me up, but given previous issues of Daily stuff being reposted on websites will decline.LTO wrote:Considering that in response to difficult questions the AFESIP spokesperson has taken a tack very much like certain high ranking government officials when they are questioned/criticized - i.e. evasion, threats and dark implications - it wouldn't be completely surprising if they also resorted to defamation/libel suits to try to silence those questions.Uncle Monty wrote:What will be more telling is if there will be a libel suit for the Daily.
My thoughts are as follows;
Libel suit: Prior to publication you hit the courts to stop a story.
Oh well the article is now published and the case goes to court in Cambodia.
a) AFESIP win, well the Cambodian legal system admits all the facts are true. The government looks bad.
b) Cambodia Daily win, well the NGOs have been overstating the case of sex trafficking and lying to get funding. The government looks good.
Option c) Launch a case in a foreign country, maybe not as the comments in front of the UN can be brought up.
My bet, The Daily are sitting on something else.
AFESIP not reacting to the story is the best defence. They hope it is forgotten and goes away

Okay I see your points, and have to agree. Now this sad event has taken place. All the sorrow goes here.

Is there any news on Bophea at all? My wife was in contact with the mother and has activated people in her neck of Kompong Speu to ask around (altho' it's a different part of the province), but no word yet.MissTara wrote:Agreed. Somebody needs to write a piece for a foreign news service ...perhaps not the BBC, they're busy cleaning their own house out now.

I don't think 'teenager goes missing' is international news. Needs something more substantial. I doubt there is any international dimension to the case anyway.vladimir wrote:Somebody needs to write a piece for a foreign news service ...perhaps not the BBC, they're busy cleaning their own house out now.

Unfortunately I suspect that Andy is correct, the international press will not bother unless it is slow news days or a 'sexy angle' can be shown.andyinasia wrote:I don't think 'teenager goes missing' is international news. So fuck the international press and lets help Tara et al where we can from Cambodia.

I was thinking more of the bitches fabricating stories with assistance from foreigners to benefit from local's misery angle...andyinasia wrote:I don't think 'teenager goes missing' is international news. I doubt they would run it. A story like that cuts too close to the bone for most charities, and places like CNN seem to get off on being endorsed by as many NGOs as possible.vladimir wrote:I was thinking more of the bitches fabricating stories with assistance from foreigners to benefit from local's misery angle...andyinasia wrote:I don't think 'teenager goes missing' is international news. Unless you can get slow motion footage of the foreigners making off with the cash - preferably tax payers' money - and fraudulently and spending it on themselves, it won't be a story.
