The massive sandstone bricks used to construct the 12th-century temple of Angkor Wat were brought to the site via a network of hundreds of canals, according to new research.
The findings shed light on how the site's 5 million to 10 million bricks, some weighing up to 3,300 pounds, made it to the temple from quarries at the base of a nearby mountain.

Well spotted, there is nothing new here, you're right.Felgerkarb wrote:This is news? I thought this was known for decades....
The quarries and the canals linking them to the center of Angkor were mapped in detail, and their function clearly identified, in a book on Phnom Kulen published by Jean Boulbet in 1979. Since then a number of academic works e.g. this one from 2007 refer to or depict the canal system running from the quarries of Beng Mealea to Angkor, parallel to the road, and no-one ever seriously believed that they took a roundabout route via the lake.
It's just the latest installment in a long and inglorious tradition of people "discovering" shit that never went missing in the first place, and it's caused a fair bit of embarrassment to the authors since it was published.

I stumbled upon 440 whilst searching deep in the alleys and boulevards. The natives had told me mystic tales of a long-lost web-forum, but no living Khmer could tell me more. I started off at Garage and HPPP, and guided by Cambodia beer and tons of rumours, finally found the hidden cyber-edifice, covered in adverts and sarcasm after years of neglect, the jungle always takes back it's own.cambod wrote:LoL, i want to discover something now!shitegeist wrote:

This discovery comes after 15 long minutes of logging out, I was nervous that maybe it had been lost to world heritage, but my research and long minutes of tab browsing finally paid off.
Negotiations have already begun with the Royal Government of KiR to map the site and start renovations, including essays by andyinasia and Interned.Orange Dragon's status at present has not been discussed.

Those who begin coercive elimination of dissent soon find themselves exterminating dissenters. Compulsory unification of opinion achieves only the unanimity of the graveyard.

I have been debating on this topic with the local SR on and off for many years. All believed these temples were built by magic, the goddesses magically use magic controlling the stones and have them transform into temples...lol. One thing I havent work out though, people claimed that the ancient Khmers are big, it if it is true why the temple stairs are so small, you literally have to walk side way to go up and down not to mention no stair handles.
Everyone bow down and pay extreme homage to his Majesty flying chicken.

I discovered electricity in Cambodia.
I'm still searching archives for evidence, but it has been witnessed by at least 10 persons.
I'm think of taking out a copyright. As soon as the power comes back on, I'll register it.

This is a surprisingly common belief among Khmer people. I don’t know where it comes from (it’s untrue).flying chicken wrote:One thing I havent work out though, people claimed that the ancient Khmers are big, it if it is true why the temple stairs are so small
As for why the stairs are so steep: It’s very likely (although not 100% certain) that the temples were not designed for use by the general public, so ease of access didn't figure in the design. Furthermore, the symbolism of Khmer temples implies that those ascending to the peak are undertaking a spiritual journey, leaving the mortal realm and scaling a cosmic mountain to the realm of the gods, which is not something that’s supposed to be achieved easily.

It comes from Hindu/Buddhist cosmology. When a cosmic cycle begins, there is physical and moral purity. Size is an aspect of physical purity or perfection. As morality degenerates, so does the physical aspect. If you study the mythological physical descriptions of the Buddha, he's about 10 ft. tall.shitegeist wrote:This is a surprisingly common belief among Khmer people. Ha, thanks, I didn't know that. But do you really think that's why so many Khmers believe their ancestors were giants? I would've thought that's a pretty esoteric explanation. I always figured it must come from the huge size of the temples, and the perceived difficulty in assembling them (even though in reality their construction was pretty straightforward).

Yeh, that too. Ancient British mythology had Stonehenge being built by giants (Gog and Magog, an obscure pair mentioned in passing in Genesis).
