- On the morning of the 23rd of March, 2013, an English businessman named Gregg Fryett was arrested in Phnom Penh by the Anti-Corruption Unit and sent to the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Court at 6:00 pm on the same day to be charged there. Instead of being detained there, however, he was escorted back to Phnom Penh where he is being held.
-Gregg Fryett is the former chairman of Sustainable Growth Group Ltd and is its largest shareholder. He also owns Sustainable Agro Energy PLC. This company goes by the name of International Green Energy in Cambodia, where it has invested in 2 hollyhock (ល្ហុងខ្វង a type of plant whose flowers are used in traditional medicinal, I think, and definitely not a sort of papaya.) plantations in the Svay Chek District of Banteay Meanchey Province. The larger of their plantations occupies 5,079 hectares, while the other is 992 hectares.
-On the morning of the 23rd of March, 2013, in an operation conducted by The Anti-Corruption Unit, the Englishman was arrested on a court warrant in a coffee shop called Mondulkiri 1, located on Street 63 in Bung Rayung Commune, just east of the Soriya Shopping Center in Phnom Penh. Also arrested in the operation were Pyne Hong, a 2 star general and deputy prosecutor of the military court, along with his son, the clerk of the military court. According to Aom Yinteung, the head of the Anti-Corruption Unit, both were later released after questioning as they were cleared of unlawful involvement with the Englishman.
-According to DAP, 4 persons in all were arrested in the operation, which was conducted in conjunction with the military police.
-(According to DAP) After the 50+ year old English suspect was arrested and sent to The Anti-Corruption Unit headquarter, he was then escorted back, about 11:00 am of the same day, to the Hotel NaNa, located on Street 154, Psar Tmey 3 Commune, Daunh Penh District, where a search of his room he was conducted.
-Though neither CEN nor DAP know what the Englishman was charged with, a military police source was quoted by DAP as saying the case involves graft ជារឿងពុករលួយ.
-To take the reader back, on the 18th of January, 2013, Gregg Fryett had been previously arrested (together with Mr. Om Somang, the former president of operations of International Green Energy ICE, and Mr. Soeum Dany, the chairman of Internatioal Green Energy ICE) by the Anti-Corruption Unit led by Aom Yinteung. All 3 had been taken to the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Court where they were charged with forging a public document ពីបទក្លែងឯកសារសាធារណៈ.
-On the 15th of February, 2013, the Englishman had sent a letter to Hun Sen’s Cabinet detailing the progress of his hollyhock plantation investment in Cambodia’s industrial farming sector.

Quick work OD - that's exactly what it is. Not 'Hollyhock', but 'Lim Hong Quong', the Khmer term for Jatophra.
This was the business our erstwhile poster Dr. Seuss was involved in, and we were about to turn our land into a Jatophra plantation and sell the seeds to his company when the land was nicked in the landgrab. Maybe it was a lucky escape.

Just like the orphanage industry, the sustainable energy industry has become a magnet for every two-bit chancer and wide boy to rock up in town. (See Andrew Wallace).

Sterling work by our boys at the Anti Corruption Unit. That evil Barang is safely under lock and Key whilst the obviously innocent general and his son have been rightfully released to go about building a better country.

When I saw the words Svay Chek district...oops.
Dictated to a slave and sent by carrier pigeon.
That's probably just the room he leads them to when a search is needed.gavinmac wrote:If he stole millions, why would he be staying in such a crap hotel?
should we place bets on the outcome?
Fryett is deported and permanently barred from the country.
Pine Hong and son are released without enough evidence to charge them. But with a couple $million in gold bars under the bed.
Another khmer inward investment success!

your leaving out the part where he's brought up on charges in the other 4 countries where the business has operations. that's the thing about being a multinational... it's harder for any one nation to just sweep things under the rug, as it ends up being a joint investigation with a lot more eyes on it.toady wrote:should we place bets on the outcome?
