Brit on bike hurt in Kampot accident
It's like the muppet show with Barang on their motos in Kampot. That's two smashes in as many months.
Jeez............how do you manage to go to a quaint, slow paced provincial town and get into a bike accident? That must take a little bit of effort.

Ok, The man's name is Geoff. It was his left leg that was horribly injured, and the young man that hit him was driving at an excessive speed..
sure looked like his right leg to me cigar- where you there? or is this from the kampot rumor mill? Should have heard the rumors flying here this morning- shit spreads hard and fast here but it is usually just that.
Don't know exactly what happened, but seems like a common mistake here for visitors, to overtake larger vehicles too fast, as they might suddenly slow down for crossing traffic that can not be seen from drivers angle.
Larger vehicles rarely slow down, as they (think they) have exclusive rights of way over smaller vehicles!teamone wrote:Don't know exactly what happened, but seems like a common mistake here for visitors, to overtake larger vehicles too fast, as they might suddenly slow down for crossing traffic that can not be seen from drivers angle.
A teenager is riding a badly maintained moto at speed, using only one brain cell! Those are the facts that make accidents inevitable!
Again not talking specifics here, but larger vehicles do halt a bit by necessity many times for crossing vehicles here. It's just a another type of flow that took me some time to get used to, and being pretty close myself few times made me seriously consider overtaking vehicles too fast, especially around places where cross traffic is prevalent.
Hello everybody,
I had to register on this forum to say the truth after reading only gossips. I was walking on the riverside in Kampot with my girlfriend when the accident happened 10m from us. WE WERE THE FIRST WITNESSES and I saw the whole thing (unfortunately). My khmer girlfriend can't stand seeing blood so we turned away, but I came back to see if anybody could call for ambulance. I don't know anything about first aid so I preferred not to stay after I saw that many people had already called the authorities and that the young khmer guy seemed fine. I came back at night to ask the businesses close to where it happened whether they know the expat' or not, and if they know how he is. I also gave my phone number to a policeman and to somebody in the closest bar who said he's a friend of the khmer boy, in case they need my "testimony".
So here is exactly what happened:
- 1: the foreigner was driving his orange honda FTR slowly, absolutely not passing any other slow vehicle: he wanted to cross the road to go/stop somewhere. He did not wear any helmet and I saw him coming from quite far: he did not look what was coming in front of him before crossing the road (or not enough). This is the first fact: he did not look... Policeman asked me if he lighted the sign to cross the road. I don't remember so I cannot say. But he was not driving fast.
- 2: the khmer boy was passing another vehicle and driving superfast with his black scooter. The policeman told me this road is limited to 30km/h. No way he was driving this slow... At this speed he could of course never expect anybody to cross the road in front of him, and never had the time to avoid the crash in any way. It is a miracle if he has nothing.
The accident was very violent, both guys flied in the air. The brit immediately was in shock when seeing his leg and screamed a lot before he fainted (probably because of shock + blood loss). I don't know how he is now. I wish him the best. But I think he would be lucky to be alive and even more if he can keep his leg which was really badly and deeply cut. I was also relieved to see the khmer boy was ok, although he flied around 5 meters!!!
I cannot judge who's right or wrong but for me it is 50-50: one was thinking he was in a moto GP race and the other one was dreaming on his big moto without helmet and did not look before crossing the road. Please don't blame on anybody without being sure. I saw it right in front of my eyes. I don't take stand for any of them.
I hope both guys are fine and I can communicate my phone number to anybody who want to contact me for official procedure or to give me news from the brit guy (without misrespect to the cambodian boy who I know is safe).
Thanks a lot,
Best,
Benjamin.
