Not a good week to be a foreigner in Cambodia it seems, stay safe out there citizens. And never use a Cambodian driver.

http://www.dap-news.com/en/index.php?op ... &Itemid=184 Syrians died, 2 missing after car falls into overflowing pond in eastern Cambodia: police
MONDAY, 30 SEPTEMBER 2013 12:55 DAP E-mail Print PDF
PHNOM PENH, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Four Syrians have died in eastern Cambodia when their car accidently drove off a road and fell into an overflowing pond on the roadside Monday, police said.
The accident occurred Monday morning in Baphnom district of eastern Prey Veng province when a car, carrying six Syrians and one Cambodian driver, fell into the pond, said On Sokhun, Baphnom police chief. "Two women and two children -- each aged about one year old-- had drowned during the accident,"he told Xinhua over telephone. "One Syrian man is alive and two are still missing."
It is unknown if the victims are in the same family and what they do in Cambodia because the surviving man cannot communicate in English, he said. "The man just pointed out in the map that his country is Syria," On Sokhun said.
Cambodia has been suffering from flooding. In the last two weeks, at least 28 people had drowned and some 73,600 families have been affected, Keo Vy, chief of the Cabinet of the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), said Sunday.

4 Syrians dead after car careens into lake
Monday, 30 September 2013 11:29 pm
(DAP article)
- Prey Veng
- 6 Syrians, including 2 women and 2 babies just over 1 year of age, drowned and are missing, while a man was pulled safely from the water, after the car they were in flipped and plunged into Lake Snai on the morning of the 30th of September, 2013. The lake is located in Teay Commune, Baphnom District, Prey Veng Province. Whether the Syrians had arrived in Cambodia for business reasons or as tourists is unclear.
- Police who arrived at the scene of the single vehicle traffic mishap which claimed the life of 4 middle easterners had difficulty in communicating with the lone survivor of the tragedy on account of the fact that he was only versed in his native language and knew no English. Nevertheless, the victim was able to point out the country of his origin when shown a map.
- The Prey Veng Province chief of police, Brigadier General Vun Saroeun, who immediately mobilized a team of officers to the scene of the accident, told DAP that precisely at 10:50 am the bodies of 4 of the victims, which included 2 women and 2 male newborns just over 1 years of age, were spotted, and that a man just over 30 years of age had managed to survive the accident. 2 more persons, 1 of whom was the driver, were reported as still missing.
-Brigadier General Vun Saroeun stated that his officers had difficulty in extracting information from the lone survivor of the accident on account of his ignorance of English, but that the victim was shown a map and pointed to Syria as the country from which he and his passengers were from.
-The provincial police chief further stated that the victims had been in a white Camry ‘chlam’ (an older model Camry, referred to as a chlam, or shark, on account of its design) when the car suddenly veered out of control, tacked, flipped and ended up in the lake.
-Police still have no idea as to the purpose of the Syrian nationals’ purpose in Cambodia as there was no one at their disposal who could speak Syrian with the victim. It was only through exchanging hand gestures with the Syrian that they were able to establish the number of victims.
-It ought to be related that after more than 2 year of civil war in Syria, many of the Syrian populace had sought asylum in neighboring countries as well as in a number of other countries. Still it is not clear as to the purpose of the 7 Syrians visit to Cambodia, whether it was for business or pleasure.

Perhaps through an NGO that has offices both here and elsewhere that may have one on staff in another location?

Update: 2 of the drowned Cambodians
Byline: Bopha Koh
Monday, 30th September, 2013, 4:14 pm
-Prey Veng Province.
- At least 4 people are dead and 2 still missing when the car they were in attempted to cross a section of dyke road that was flooded more than 2 meter deep, but got swept off the road and into the river by the force of the current.
-The incident occurred sometime between the hours of 7pm and 8 pm, on the evening of the 29th of September, 2013, in Snai Village, Teay Commune, Baphnom District - but was only discovered 6:00 am next morning, the 30th of September, 2013, when a fisherman in his boat happened to see a lone foreigner floating in the river and hanging on to a breng kyol tree (ប្រេងខ្យល់ from whose leaves a liniment oil is expressed), shouting for help. Police summoned to the scene by the fisherman managed to pull the victim safely out.
- On account of the fact that the victim spoke neither Khmer nor English, police at the scene at first surmised that the foreigner had been the lone occupant of a boat that had sunk. Police were soon disabused of their theory, however, when the body of a foreign woman suddenly appeared, floating toward the river bank, followed by 2 more bodies, this time the bodies of 2 boys. Communicating by means of sketches, the victim was able to make police understand that a car with 7 people in it had been swept off the flooded dike road by the strong current, which had submerged it in the river.
- The deputy provincial police chief of Prey Veng Province, Mr. Seng Sophok, stated that an examination of the bodies of the 2 dead women revealed that they were foreign nationals. As for the 2 boys, the examination revealed that they were Cambodians. As for the 2 missing victims, 1 was identified as the driver of the vehicle, a Cambodian, but the nationality of the other missing person is still unknown. Police continue to investigate. Meanwhile, the car was described as a white ‘chlam’ Camry, license plate PHNOM PENH 2A-8239, which had departed from Baphnom District Town and was headed toward National Highway 11, on its way to Prey Veng Town.
- According to the police report, the identity of the lone survivor is still unknown, and police continue in their efforts to locate persons still missing.

So the kids who drowned in the car were Khmers but the adults were Arabs??

Pretty horrible story this, but details are sketchy obviously. But was there a skull in a suitcase in the trunk?

Try people at Zaman university, lots of Turkish people, some might know Kurdish?
edit: I called, they will check and let me have details if anyone speaks Kurdish.
Could a Turkish speaking person make sense of Kurdish and vice versa?
