I remember having lunch with a friend in the US and the waiter had a foreign accent. My friend as where he's from and the guy says "Europe." My friend asks what country and the guy says "The European Union, that's a country." Further discussion ensues until the waiter reluctantly admits to being Romanian.
I remember visiting Peles Castle in Romania, it's a nice place, lovely ornate interior, there was a palace tour guide leading everyone around. At the end of the tour, he started getting animated asking us "Has this place changed your perception of Romania? People think we are all gypsies, but look at this lovely Italian marble and look at this artwork, do you still think we are gypsies now?" it was sort of awkward.
So I think Romanians don't like admitting they are from Romania because of this. If you ever want to troll a Romanian, keep asking where he's from until he says Romania, and then say "Ah, gypsies."
I asked and she told me she was from Romania, she didn't pretend to be Italian....no more than a Khmer pretends to be anyway.
