Foreigners banned from joining protests
The CD is reporting that foreigners who join anti-government protests will be arrested and deported, according to comments from the Interior Ministry yesterday. That's an interesting development. I recall quite a few wide-eyed dreadlocked backpackers joining in anti-government rallies a year or two ago. I wonder if they will do the same in future.

I know I'm unloveable. You don't have to tell me. I don't have much in my life, but take it - it's yours.

Totally agree with that. We are visitors here and have absolutely no right to get involved in local politics.

Deporting foreigners for protesting land grabs or electoral fraud would attract plenty of attention from tabloid newspapers. This sounds counter-productive for the govt. It could be a good strategy for activists to fly people in to protest with the intention of getting them deported and making headlines.

Is anti-government protest understood the same as protest against an unfair government policy or decision?

I bet that's one of the aims of this action. So be careful pulling out your camera phone at the next beat down.

As an aside, I remember posting that the cops near Freedom Park in 2013 were telling me the government was fed up with foreign protestors interfering with Cambodia and being called a liar here...eat crow.

How long do you have to be here before you stop being a visitor?Hanno wrote:Totally agree with that. We are visitors here and have absolutely no right to get involved in local politics.
I've been berated that immigrants back in my home country have the same right to be there as I do after they lived there just a few years, and I've spent much longer in Cambodia.

I am no longer an expat, more of an exile.

That's bullshit. If you live somewhere and the government makes a decision that affects you I think you have every right to protest.Hanno wrote:Totally agree with that. We are visitors here and have absolutely no right to get involved in local politics.
Even if you don't live there but strongly disagree then why shouldn't you be able to protest.
If governments didn't constantly do the wrong thing there would be no need for protests.
Censorship is wrong.

Interesting question. If it is used against accredited journalists, that would be pretty significant. Cambodia has always had a fairly free English language press. Barring press from covering protests would be a very big change and would not look good on the world stage at all. During the protests last year, at one point when they ordered everybody to stay away and were shooing away foreign tourists and other gawkers, I found my press pass would still get me through. There were of course a couple of incident where the police targeting foreign press, but those seemed isolated at the time. It'll be interesting to see how the law in interpreted on the street.Phuket2006 wrote:does that include those reporting an photographing??
The hand of foreign organizers behind some protests has been pretty obvious at times...
