Anton had health issues and was on prescription medications but he WAS NOT doing any drugs, nor was any wrongdoing involved. I knew him well and he was a very good man living a good life and trying to help others. He was in Cambodia working on a book project and was taking good care of himself, working out every day and active in the community. Most likely it was an adverse reaction to prescription meds and possibly alcohol mixed in, though he only had a few beers that night. We are shocked and saddened by his way-too-early passing and it’s deplorable that the police and media bungle the investigation and print such terrible untruths.
On behalf of Anton’s family, his close fiends, and the martial arts community that knew him well, we wanted to set the record straight, and request privacy in this matter so his family and grieve.

What prescription meds will kill you if you have a few beers?
Sometimes when a fatal overdose is reported in Cambodia, and the deceased has no friends, or no friends who use the internet, we don't hear anything else about it.
Other times, the deceased's friends will come online and opine "Oh, he didn't use drugs, I think it must have been illness/murder/accidental fall/tainted Coca-Cola"
I'm sorry for your loss, but I reject the notion that expats know other expats well enough to reliably state whether the other person uses drugs privately behind closed doors. 30-60 year old guys routinely die in Cambodia, especially in the Death Zone east of Norodom between streets 110 and 172. This does not happen in their home countries, notwithstanding that people there take prescription drugs.
I don't think denying that narcotics usually play a role in all these deaths of young Westerners in Cambodia "sets the record straight" in any way.

គ្រឿងញៀន (kreung njien) refers to an addictive drug. I'm not aware if morphine belongs to this category.
On the other hand, if it was excessive use of a medical drug I would expect the words (គ្រឿង) ថ្នាំ or (kreung) thnam.
Whatever it was, may his soul RIP.

Tramadol and or Codeine mixed with alcohol causes heavy kidney and liver damage, and can cause one to stop breathing and or faint very very easy to die from on a bender mixing these crappy drugs.
As someone commented to me this morning: "Why are expat deaths in Cambodia always either violent, or pathetic or embarrassing, and often a combination of all three."

I doubt that varies that much geographically. Death is generally undignified regardless of the location.scobienz wrote:As someone commented to me this morning: "Why are expat deaths in Cambodia always either violent, or pathetic or embarrassing, and often a combination of all three."
At least, this Anton dude's friends stopped the scumbag photographers from exploiting his death. They also possibly prevented a Steve Morrish type raid on Rehab by some angry MMA fighters. That is something you should consider with K440's policy on publishing links to death images. To cause families and friends distress for the sake of expat entertainment may cause some people to launch something more extreme than a DDoS attack.
hotel Haaw Moni (ហាវ មុន្នី) should be Hotel Harmony.

Because even if you die of cancer or peacefully of a heart attack as an old man the Cambodians papers will publish photos of your bloating naked body and the chat forums will post links to those photos and then engage in speculation and scuttlebutt in order to paint it in the worst light.scobienz wrote:As someone commented to me this morning: "Why are expat deaths in Cambodia always either violent, or pathetic or embarrassing, and often a combination of all three."
