Continue reading here. .. http://m.bangkokpost.com/news/756820China has provided Cambodia with shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles, Cambodia's defence minister said on Friday, as the two countries agreed on new military aid to further strengthen their close ties.
Cambodia is one of China's most stalwart allies in Asia, routinely backing China's position at international forums in a region where China and United States vie for influence.
"The visit of the defence minister of the People's Republic of China has achieved good results," Defence Minister Tea Banh told reporters after a signing ceremony with his visiting Chinese counterpart, Chang Wanquan.
Tea Banh attended a meeting of Asean defence ministers this week where they scrapped plans for a joint statement because they failed to agree on whether to include a reference to the disputed South China Sea, which China had objected to.
Tea Banh made no mention of those negotiations but said China had recently delivered shoulder-fired missiles.

Shoulder fired, ground to air missiles are defensive weapon systems. They follow the military helicopters that were, while unarmed, used to intimidate protesters in the New Year Garment Workers protests a few years ago.
More interesting is the perceived threat?
The Thai Generals might want to do a little temple snatching in the North, to gain home support. More likely is a small insurgence force backed by those who would see regime change. The Chinese QW range are more suited to defence against heli-bourne drop and snatch missions. Do who know what the Chinese have supplied?

Nothing but an opinionated tourist. The Pope spends more time in countries than I do ! It is also not my place to comment on a gentleman's dress. A real 23 minute wonder, that obviously knows little about ovens and cooking in Cambodia.
Good questions Wigan, my first thought was the carnage that could ensue whilst they were practicing with them. I hope they don't supply any army bases near the airport.
Australia had a problem with shoulder fired missiles, someone stole a few and sold them to the bikies. I remember reading an accounts the first use of the Stingers in Afghanistan by the rebels. They shot down two or three Russian helicopters very quickly. The pilots didn't want to fly anymore!

Thailand has been investing in a new arsenal, including F-16s and T-84 tanks, presumably for the dark days when the King finally dies. Laos and Cambodia are China's boys in Indochina for antagonizing Vietnam but they haven't been given anything substantial by China, just a few obsolete vehicles.
By 2020 the Thais will have 20 JAS-39 Gripen fighters from Sweden and 55 F-16s from the USA, 20 of which will be upgraded to the most recent specification. Cambodia has, as far as I'm aware, 6 MiG-21s and 5 L-39s from the Vietnam era. The helicopters received by Cambodia -- Harbin Z-9 -- are nothing like an Apache or even a Black Hawk and are frankly lacking in the face of the similar utility Eurocopter EC725 that the Thais have on order.
The missiles stolen in Australia were one-shot M72s that are good for blowing up armored vehicles, presumably armored trucks if you're a bikie, but not planes. Again they're Vietnam-war era tech and far outclassed by the TOWs flooding Syria right now.

I don't recall that ever happening. There were no helicopters involved in any of the protests.EdinWigan wrote: They follow the military helicopters that were, while unarmed, used to intimidate protesters in the New Year Garment Workers protests a few years ago.
None of those aircraft are in service anymore. As far as I know the air force here has a few fixed-wing transport planes, a few aging Mi-17s and small French helicopters, and then their new fleet of Chinese Z-9s. Comparing it with the Thai air force is ludicrous. At the same time, a few shoulder-fired missiles can knock out the best fighters.penisjokeforaname wrote:Cambodia has, as far as I'm aware, 6 MiG-21s and 5 L-39s from the Vietnam era.

Oh yes, we were in a roof top bar on, I think 118 and helicopters were flying in from teh river and over the people gathering in Freedom Park. They did a lot of practice/training runs along the river - standard practice for flight runs in built-up areas. I wasn't aware of any major derivations from that run to check out protesters, and even if they did that it is exactly the same as the spies-in-the-sky that turns up at any event or protest in any other countries.

Not normally one to disagree with you but on this occasion they were flying 90 degrees away from the line of the river and imho, too low and fast to be standard for aerial observation. They were, however, using the river as a route to and fromLucky Lucan wrote:They did a lot of practice/training runs along the river - standard practice for flight runs in built-up areas. The size and visibility of detail, like pilots, would put them about 2 to 3 blocks North of where I was. (a roof top backpackers bar, a big place on a corner)

I heard that they were put on high alert for incidents of illegal jasmine pants that day.

Decent weapons sold to the Cambodians always find their way to the black market - see the ammo dump that exploded circa 2003 right before an official inventory took place.. But it's Chinese crap, so the shelf life on those is limited.

This is pretty telling because the MiGs were given an upgrade by the Israelis in the early 2000s. I'm assuming the new Chinese missiles are the export oriented FN-6 or FN-16 MANPAD, which max out at 6kms, and they already had some deployed in 2008 during that skirmish.Lucky Lucan wrote: None of those aircraft are in service anymore. Chinese weaponry is anything but crap nowadays, at least the most recent generation. Their J-20 5th generation fighter looks to be superior to the F-35 on paper, their Type-99 tank is equal to the M1A1 and T-90, their CAIC Z-10 attack helicopter had serious input from ex-Soviet designers and can probably match the US models.Felgerkarb wrote:Decent weapons sold to the Cambodians always find their way to the black market - see the ammo dump that exploded circa 2003 right before an official inventory took place.. Cambodia is, however, receiving all the obsolete material while the Chinese become a true fighting force.

The true test is the looming military option the Chinese have set their course upon...

Dead Right. Thailand has the world record of military coups, but the population Loyal to the King (GOD)
When the King finally dies( he may be dead but not published) all hell will break loose in the Kingdom.
Nothing can prepare the people for this.
