Tthe only government building on the beach that I'm aware of is the police station. At least I think that's what it is. Half way between the nature bit and O-one.ken svay wrote:This is going to be bad for tourism. I wonder what is driving it? Where is the old royal residence on Occateul referred to on facebook?
Apparently there are some killing fields around there connected with an old government building. I've just heard about it but never checked it out though.

Once they have cleared the area they need to replant the space with palms and other appropriate fora. Viewing the coast from the sea , one should only be able to see green.
I remember when they built the public stretch at Otres that they cut down quite a few mature trees but they have planted a lot of new ones. At the time I assumed that Otres was to be the public beach and Occateul would be sold off. That's about the time that they fenced off the big ex golf course block and hung up the sign with the pictures of the hotel tower and lots of low level apartments to be constructed. They had started piling before then, there are hundreds of piles driven in but over the years the sign rotted away and fell down.
A couple of years ago I was told that The Marriott were to be the first big US hotel chain to come and build a big hotel on that block. There were drawings and specifications done but that's all.
The land must have ownership issues, who actually claims to own it I wonder.
If they do knock down the hotel bar restaurants on the beach the effects will be worse for some than others. Naia has a huge area inside for dining and drinking because they are a high rise. Secret garden and Tamu do not have similar spaces so their amenity will be affected severely. When they built that Tamu bar restaurant they used huge amounts of concrete on the beach, it was like they were going to build a flak tower on top. The bulldozer is going to have to work hard down there.

No body owns any thing on the beach. The land is leased by the governor to the vendors and bars etc... and then sublet to many unsuspecting lessees. There was never supposed to be permanent or any accomodation right on the beach.
When I looked at buying down there 10 years ago I could never get confirmation of ownership to the land we looked at. This was across the road and we would have had to rent the beachfront separately.

I'll miss Papa Pippo's and Tamu. That's it.
I miss Papa John. RIP. Those were the good days for Otres. Sadly it was all over years ago.
I miss Papa John (AKA Hippy Jack in Hawaii) too. The sunsets haven't changed.

Exactly that...Clutchen Menuts wrote:If the beach is public land, who are these 'businesses' paying rent to? And if they are not paying rent then surely they are squatting?
Some government theif has been collecting rent for years off state owned land, this will all be settled soon the rent will go up as the next official joins the lottery

I was lucky enough to see Papa John 3 days before he died. He didn't seem to be all there but hey he was stoned all the time and I thought he was tired so we left. He was found on the floor the next day and was sent to hospital but you know the rest.content wrote:I miss Papa John. RIP. Those were the good days for Otres. Sadly it was all over years ago.
I think he must have had a stroke but I didn't realise.
Coming up on 3 years now I think.
RIP man

I read a Phnom Penh post story about a company dredging the river at Otres Beach and reclaiming land with the spoil. They have been stopped apparently, anyone know about this?

Noticed they've started clearing a road behind the start of Otres beach with a bulldozer and are compacting with a large vibrating roller. Not a mickey mouse job for sure.
