Why isn't Occheteul Beach included in this purge? Aren't there hippy shacks there?

Over the last 6 months there also seems to be shacks going up all along the previously untouched stretch of beach on Occhateul with all of them having some official looking papers pinned to boards behind the businesses. They are more barang orientated and seem to just serve drinks.
Some of those huge new higher end hotels in SHV look so empty they look spooky - here's Johnny!!

A big chunk of the land on Ochheuteal is owned by Kith Meng. I think Chivas is on the general's land.

I heard a lot of that area had been leased to mainly Chinese developers?cptrelentless wrote:A big chunk of the land on Ochheuteal is owned by *. I think Chivas is on the general's land.

I wonder if it's a matter of the Royal Group pier bringing attention to the general problem of the presence of 'anarchic businesses' on Otres, or if maybe it is a matter of face - that if the big guy is going to take a fall the little guys have to go too, or if perhaps the big guys were inspired in part to build their unauthorized pier by the presence of all of the other unauthorized businesses, and now the government wants to remove that inspiration before any other big guys get ideas. All business attached to the sea along the Otres Beach in Sihanoukville and within 80 meters from the coastline, must evacuate in the coming weeks, according to an order by the National Committee of Management and Development that will be followed by the Sihanoukville local government. The order will affect more than 60 business owners, including the Royal Group of Cambodian tycoon Kith Menh, who intended to built facilities to connect with Koh Rong.

I guess the question of the moment is whether the government is really going to carry through and force businesses to move off. The government tends to make such pronouncements about the imminent destruction of some area, only to drop it within a couple of weeks, only to come back a year or two later and do the same thing, until eventually they carry through with the destruction. It seems to be their way of warning people that someday something is going to happen and don't act like you weren't warned. Remember a year or two ago when the businesses on Suramarith near Sothearos in Phnom Penh were given a month to move, then it all just kind of faded and was forgotten. The government will be back, eventually.
Or maybe it's just that the time has come, another step in the government 'cleaning up its act' post-2013, that they really are just trying to clean up the 'anarchic development' and land grabbing in Sihanoukville. So is the dismantling of the fences on Independence Beach still proceeding? http://www.phnompenhpost.com/business/s ... -says-govt
The northern end if Occateul, the old government block is owned by the same person with the Koh Rong lease. I have been thinking about the Otres 2 hotel stuff near the beach. They have all been built by the road so are about forty metres from the high water mark.

The days of hippy shacks are well over. If you had said druggies and alcoholics, as they are the one's spending more than they earn on their businesses, then I would agree.gavinmac wrote:Why isn't Occheteul Beach included in this purge? Aren't there hippy shacks there?
Nowadays business men often adopt a hippy attitude to look cool, a bit like the recycled hotel in Zoolander 2 (mushroom). They are far from being hippy and wouldn't even have the first idea of what being a hippy is about.
IMO hippy and businessman are two words in the English language that do not go together.
Plus, the hippy shacks that used to be on Ocheteul were knocked down years ago. The government put in a concrete walkway on the beach and also built a long row of identical looking business premises on the beach. To the casual observer the only thing that denotes them is the sign outside. I personally like what the authorities have done in Otres by clearing the middle section of the beach and planting it as a sort of beach park. I wish they would pay to clean the place though. It's disgustingly filthy.

Exactly. The report is complete rubbish IMO. Just that time of the\year again. They have enjoyed the cash from the work visa back payments (lol) and the bungalow tax, Now someone higher up wants their bung.ken svay wrote:The northern end if Occateul, the old government block is owned by the same person with the Koh Rong lease. They will wait before clearing it until the high-end developers who have leased large areas of land start making noises about developing it.
Anything else would be a huge loss of income for them.

That will be the major problem in making all the beaches public , who will clean them ?

All the fences and wall's between Independence Hotel and Holiday Palace have been demolished , and a couple of big projects on the beach front have stopped construction , looked like yesterday , they were dismantling the cranes and pile drivers . Independence Hotel has lost it's private beach .So is the dismantling of the fences on Independence Beach still proceeding? [
All businesses on the beach side of the road have been given notice to quit . I was going to buy a block on the beach at Otres 2 a few years ago , before I bought on the river , but was told it would only be temporary . A couple of those places have spent thousands on redevelopment , and only been open a few months . Interesting times ahead .ken svay wrote:I believe those at Otres 1 are fucked including that OC or whatever they are called. But at Otres 2 the beach bar/restaurants in front of their hotels will survive. They earn too much money not to, unlike the hippy shacks at Otres 1. But who knows?

That's what hippies are for and proof that there are none left at Otres.by sattroni » Fri Feb 19, 2016 8:25 am

Wow, it sounds like they are serious this time. It's hard to believe that there will be fairness though.
Confirmed , this establishment has been given notice to quit the beach . They have built a substantial bar / restaurant area in front of their
resort at Otres 2 .

Any signs of huge earth movers around yet? Maybe they have been paid off by the investors and are doing a victory beach type thing. What is the reason they are doing it now? It surely can't be for environmental reasons as it states in the paper. BIG lol.sattroni wrote:Confirmed , this establishment has been given notice to quit the beach . When I was doing research down there I approximated that the big developers might start by 2016/17. It's moving fast round there. Just compare the village 2 years ago to today.
This is going to be bad for tourism. I wonder what is driving it? Where is the old royal residence on Occateul referred to on facebook?
