Jonathan was from Adelaide and moved to Phnom Penh last June. He was working at Western University. I've seen the lad around town regularly.

Kids have to fucking stop thinking they can do drugs, especially in Cambodia.
RIP. A very sad, wasted way to go.

Dreadfully sad news.
I knew Jonathan - I met him in Kampot where he was on holiday with his parents. They had come over to visit him and they were truly lovely people.
We met up for drinks a few times, and he was very engaging to talk to. He loved his job and was clearly a smart kid. The last person who I would expect to read about meeting such a tragic end.
RIP Jonathan.

Well said AE86.
I've visited Cambodia 7-8 times the last 15 months. Am in PP now and well, this time it seems to me signs of drug and alcohol abuse are more and more visible on locals and foreigners. Just one minor incident. A Euro guy comes up to me at White River and wants to bum a cigarette. "Man" I say, "cigs are cheap, a buck fifty at the shop." Thing is, he was so skinny, so blitzed, so pumped full of whatever -- not alcohol -- he could hardly speak. He took the cig without a word and walked bare-footed back to whence he came. Saw lots of barangs and locals walking the edge of the abyss east of Norodom. Then there's the ones you don't see until they show up DOA at the GH.

interesting. it's been over 5 years since I was there, so I'm expecting the changes in businesses and even in the type of barang/holidaymaker, but not really prepared for seeing this type of thing. I never really saw it when I was there before. Even Jamie44, who I saw practically every day of the week (almost) never looked phuced up like that when i saw him.PenhMan wrote:Well said AE86.

I haven't noticed any particular difference. Guys like the deceased are unlikely to be walking around begging with no shoes anyway.

Violet, I don't remember seeing this stuff either when I lived in PP 2011-12. This trip I was offered opium 3 times, which I'd not heard before. Ever.
