My landladys daughter also is of the "blame vietnam" view.

She thought that only cambodia has political corruption and western countries are above that.

I explained from my understanding that australias preference voting makes it so if you vote for a party above the line and they get the least votes, that your vote goes to whoever they prefered on the ballet list(unless you specify exact voting order below the line), which then makes your vote support a party you might oppose.

And telling her what ralph nader said to david letterman, how he ried to get a 3rd party going in america, and how democrats used lawyers to block/invalid his votes in 30? States.

She was suprised, i said but a difference is in west you can complain on facebook how you hate your leaders, and you arent automatically viewed by govt. as a bad person.

On another note, does anyone here know if non-cambodian passport holders will be allowed to apply for a job with voting registration? Supposedly the NEC may need 7000 staff, but they will announce it at a commune level or something. Im reading the english website translation, its not updated maybe and hard to load pages.

Maybe you should stop explaining and listen to her. When was the last time that political commentators, union leaders and environmental activists were gunned down in broad daylight in western countries, while all key opposition figures were jailed/persecuted on absurd charges?

Yes, there is political corruption in the west, but to compare the two is absolutely fallacious.

... What already is clear, however, is that many Cambodians believe Kem Ley died for his political beliefs, and few have much faith in the investigation the government has promised to conduct. Whatever the truth behind Kem Ley’s death, the event already seems to mark a point of no return in public opinion: The fracture between the people and the government may now be irrevocable.
[,,,]
If Kem Ley’s murder was designed to instill fear, it has only stoked outrage and determination.

Call me naive, but that is not quite the same assessment that I would reach... To me, that's a good talking point, but not reality here.

Really? I'm sure I saw a couple of police shields with the writing on upside-down yesterday.

The authorities are clearly expecting trouble and taking steps to limit it. They are banning people from marching on foot. Only cars and, presumably, bikes and tuk tuks.

It will be interesting to see how that is managed. An excuse to crack heads for people who will inevitably want to walk now and again?

Ever since 1972, I have considered it ill advised to walk anywhere near a crowd, especially on a Sunday.

I think elements on both sides are hoping for an excuse for violence.

CD people continue to report rumors of nearby military stirrings.

Morticia's family have several members in high places in the security apparatus and they are quite busy. I have noted an increase in random police puttering around on motos having a look around TTP over the last two days...looking for....something.

Also, moving tanks take a lot of gas, something the RCAF is always short on as they sell off stocks illegally to line pockets of various Generals. Getting them to part with those funds means the big man means business.
