Battambang province: A foreign woman’s backpack was snatched while she was riding a bicycle. The incident took place at 6.30pm on 2 August, 2016 right in front of the NGO "Phare Ponleu Selpak" (ហ្វាពន្លឺសិល្បៈ)in Anh'Chanh (ភូមិអញ្ចាញ ) , sangkat OChar (សង្កាត់អូរចា) , Battambang city.
Police and citizens helped give chase and recovered the bag, but the suspect fled on a moto and got away unharmed. Team leader of theminor crimes bureau, mr Chhun Kimsong (ឈឿង គឹមសុង) reported that: "the foreign woman who got robbed is called Maya Sophia, 22 years, and is a German tourist." He continued; "the woman didn't know the perpetrator, who rode a moto of brand MSX and grabbed her bag while the victim was cycling (away) from the NGO "Phare Ponleu Selpak", but police and citizens ran after the perpetrator immediately and found the bagpack back straight away.”
According to a witness "that foreign woman rode a bicycle, left Phare Ponleu Selpak and got onto the concrete road and only cycled a few meters, the thief on a moto came behind her and snatched her bag" the witness continued to say "the thief ('sticky fingers'?? ដៃស្អិត) was alone on the moto and came from the northern direction, before snatching the bag off the victim who was riding a bike." The same source confirmed that at the time there were people who gave chase and that slightly later the police also came to help. During the chase the thief dropped the bag and one citizen picked it up to give it to the police.”
After finding the bag back the police commissioner gave the order to go to the woman and give the bag back immediately. The victim said that a total of 100 dollars in the bag had gone missing as well as some documents. As for her telephone and her travel document; she didn't lose them.
Mr Chhun Kimsong said that they do not know if the 100 dollar went missing because the thief took it or if it went missing when the thief threw the bag. Officials are working on the investigation to find the perpetrator.
