The Road Traffic Law was supposed to make Cambodia’s roads safer. After about a week of wide-spread helmet wearing when it was introduced in January, it seems everything has reverted back to normal.
As well as clarifying a few things are not actually against the law, such as turning right at red lights (i.e. Article 11) – news for Europeans if not North Americans – and that no, it is not against the law to drive with your lights on during the day (i.e. Article 27, point 1, subsection D), the law, however, clarified which driving offenses were punishable by fines.
While motorbike riders no longer need a license for bikes with engines under 125cc (thanks Prime Minister Hun Sen), there are plenty of other rules that need to be followed. Here are some of the obvious ones, as well as a few that are not.
Just remember that if you get booked and you fail to pay within 30 days, the fine is doubled. After 60 days of not paying, the initial fine is trebled, and if you haven’t paid after 90 days, police will submit the matter to the courts.
