A couple who convinced a woman to give them $30,000 to arrange a marriage for her in Australia, before fleeing with the money, was arrested in Phnom Penh yesterday, police said.
Thoeun Samnang, 29, and his wife Sok Saknika, 26, were arrested yesterday morning at a market in Chbar Ampov district’s Prek Pra commune, commune police chief Ti Nea told Khmer Times.
“They were arrested on an arrest warrant accusing them of fraud. I do not know any more details because the municipal police quickly transported them to their station for questioning,” he said.
According to the National Police website, the alleged crime took place in June, but a warrant for the couple’s arrest wasn’t issued by prosecutors at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court until August 18.
Mr. Nea said it had taken a long time to locate the pair, who had been hiding out in neighboring Nirout commune.
Spokespeople for the municipal police and municipal court could not be reached for comment yesterday.
