Still considerably worse than UK suicide rates.
Men: 14.4. Women 5.0. Overall 9.6.

In terms of countries, that could have a few contenders. I know he's not Welsh.Starving Pelican wrote:You're looking at the wrong country for comparison. LJ is a sheep shagger.

1. That's because suicide is haram in Islam.scobienz wrote:
Number of suicides in Australia per 100,000 people: Men 16.1, women 5.2, overall 10.6
Number of suicides in UK per 100,000 people: men 9.8, women 2.6, overall 6.2
In other words, Australians are twice as likely to kill themselves than Brits.
2. Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way.

I have the utmost respect for real teachers. You know those who have an internationally recognised teaching qualification that enables them to teach in government schools in their country.springrain wrote:

.
This I assume you have.
However for those that wash up on these shores with no real training and proceed to teach English with no idea for a pittance are not teachers IMHO, but merely entertainers. BTW I do not consider that a month long CELTA course is equivalent to a teaching diploma or degree, however a Masters degree in a subject does pretty much give the right to teach in that subject at post school level.
So if you are a registered teacher in your country, I will point out that my derisory comments are not pointed at you, however if you are like the rest, well good luck to you but do not consider that you are in a professional occupation as your job can be filled by any semi literate Aussie bogan that will work cheaper.
So in short I do not demean real teachers, but TEFL'rs are not real teachers, merely entertaining charlatans who have deluded themselves that they are the equivalent of qualified professionals and thus are worthy of derision.
Note to self: Must be nice to morons.

Generally you put you heart and soul into a passion. Putting it into a job where others reap the excess rewards could be considered by many as crazy.springrain wrote:

If you have a job you are paid for it.
To put your heart and soul into something is to imply that it is a passion, not just a job. I assume you work for a language school where the owner makes a profit?
Why then would you go over and above the required input so that someone else will reap the rewards for your excess passion and efforts? Are you doing this for students? If so why not open your own school so you are paid the same and the students pay less (which is the profit to the school owner)?
It is nice to have a passion but why would you be passionate and go the extra yard to make someone else such a profit without reward? What example are you setting for the students? Communism or socialism is recorded in history as an abject failure in promoting the common good.
Being a so called teacher may help you justify your existence but how will your later years be financed?
Note to self: Must be nice to morons.

BTW springrain, I did a CELTA and have a couple of Masters degrees and have lectured and examined (one time I failed over 50% of students) at undergraduate and post graduate level, but I do not call myself a teacher.
Note to self: Must be nice to morons.
I think 26 years experience doing a job you love, far outweighs some entrance level teaching qualification whether it allows you to teach in your own country or not.

Uh, this thread is about the late deceased James Philip, it is not about who or who isn't a teacher in your humble opinion. Just sayin.
