New Zealand tourist Christopher James Adams dies of an overdose
While I agree with much of what you say - yes, ken svay is a tit - you're wrong about Murdoch not being an owner of the Herald. The paper's parent company is owned by APN and Murdoch is one of the largest shareholders of APN.
There you go - some of that fact-checking you asked for. No need to thank me.

Many of the tourists who overdose in Cambodia are not penniless "lowlifes." They have jobs back home, they have money to travel to Southeast Asia. They also have drug addiction problems. That's why they end up overdosing.Kiwi-ette wrote: I'm no investigator. But here's what I suspect so far. This guy Adams was not on a holiday. NZ Herald is covering up for something. What was Adams doing in Cambodia? Good question. Why this choice of hotel? It does not make sense. I think the drugs story could be manufactured. As has been mentioned, Cambodian police aren't exactly models of forensic examination. But taking drugs is a possibility. Did Adams really have a heart attack? Possible. Lots of questions.
I can see why gavinmac or anyone else would want to be bothered with an investigation. But the profile of this guy does not fit that of the usual lowlifes that run into trouble in the KOW.
Just think there is a more interesting story here that merits more than nasty and dismissive statements from posters.
I tend to take newspapers at their word. The NZ Herald says he was on holiday. The notion that he was on a secret undercover reporting assignment and was murdered and the Herald is trying to cover it up by blatantly lying about his presence in Cambodia makes no sense.
It seems that when Western dudes commit suicide or overdose in Cambodia, which they do frequently, there's almost always someone who then comes on to Khmer440 who says "I don't believe it, there's more to this story, hint, hint, maybe he was murdered." I just find all such posts to be quite silly.

With every expat death you deride for shit and giggles, you're inviting karma to ensure you are one day found dead on a toilet with your pants round your knees in some Daun Penh guesthouse. I hope the photos don't make it on here.
News Corp bought 14.9% of APN in March 2015. Their current holding is about 12%. That does rank as the number 2 shareholder, but does not give News Corp control of APN. The New Zealand division of APN (NZME) was spun off in its own shareholding in NZ in June 2016. News Corp received about a 14% stake in NZME, since all APN shareholders received one NZME share for each APN share they owned at the time of the spin-off. News Corp sold its eentire shareholding in NZME in October 2016.scobienz wrote:While I agree with much of what you say - yes, ken svay is a tit - you're wrong about Murdoch not being an owner of the Herald. Thus, News Corp/Murdoch have never controlled APN since their buy-in in March 2015. ANd Nes Corp/Murdoch not only never controlled NZME, but it got out of NZME as soon as it possibly could.

The fact that I accept that reported drug overdoses are, in fact, drug overdoses and not the work of Chinese baby milk hitmen does not mean I am bitter or that I deride expat deaths for shits and giggles.Joon wrote:Gavinmac sounds like he's in another shithole third-world country or worse, in Bangkok....scobienz wrote:You are becoming more bitter than even the most bitter expat.gavinmac wrote:

Now you're splitting hairs. Fine it's never been controlled by Murdoch but it's clear he had a significant stake in it through APN.
Either way, your proposition that I should provide some systematic fact checking service is nonsense. This is a member driven forum and - let's be honest - not a few of them are totally nuts. Ain't got no time for that. This isn't a news site or the Economist. Do you similarly call on Facebook owners and shareholders to fact check every post and claim made there?

Actually I think he does. Though not the typical, there are still occasional but regular reports of middle aged males from otherwise normal seeming backgrounds dying of drug overdoses in riverfront area hotels, some much nicer than Angkor International. With tuktuks lying about the drugs they are selling and the quality of the smack being so good, it is easy to make a mistake.Kiwi-ette wrote: But the profile of this guy does not fit that of the usual lowlifes that run into trouble in the KOW.

Vice took Playboy's comment about The Temple Bar, which has been gone a long time, maybe 10 years (?) and made it sound like they applied to the current establishment.
I like the way it was attributed to Koon Khmer but linked to 440! I like that Koon Khmer a lot though, brilliant photos. One Koon Khmer commenter describes the old hotel bar as a 24 hour-a-day establishment with "a plentiful selection of ladies with negotiable morals" and a signature cocktail containing "vodka, Red Bull and liquid Viagra".
