Peter predicted this kind of shit in an article he wrote for Al Jazeera a couple of years ago. http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/featur ... 57534.html
But what its critics fear most is Article 28, which would make it illegal to publish any content seen to "hinder the sovereignty and integrity" of the country, "incite or instigate the general population", or "generate insecurity, instability and political [in]cohesiveness". It would ban any content deemed "non-factual which slanders or undermine the integrity of any government agencies", or is damaging to the country's "moral and cultural values".
That's just vague enough to serve as one hell of a cudgel to beat down politically bothersome journos & bloggers.
Btw, that work he did on illegal logging is one hell of a piece of heroic journalism.

Allegedly not an "agreement" but a "Letter of Complaint" in which 3 local men are asking the (district) Governor to intervene.hennessy wrote:Could someone translate the signed & thumbprinted "agreement" pictured to the right of his passport photo? (hard to read)

Fuck, the press reports are all over the place on this. Arrest, agreement, complaint, threat. I can't keep up.

Well if you can't keep up I'm not expecting anyone else can. It's unusual for a western journalist to be targeted but I expect this incident is only a warning.

It's deliberately all over the place, I think. Feed different people different information, it's not a new strategy. And it's reflected in many facets of government bureaucracy...if you look at how work permits were handled, for instance, there was never one definitive source that everyone followed. The Labour Act itself only states that employers are 'responsible'for obtaining the work permit, but the responsibility is not defined, ie financial, administrative assistance.gavinmac wrote:Fuck, the press reports are all over the place on this. Indefinite = room to maneuver, people are confused.

What's the Oversees Press Club of Cambodia? And why do they only have a gmail address? And why was it posted on that forum with a Koon Khmer watermark?
And I've never been on that site before, but is it just one guy (Loy9) talking to himself the whole time?

Pretty much, yes. He's nuttier than bscw in that regard.Miguelito wrote:

CD are behaving like excited children over this issue, running headlines and tweeting like crazy about a story pretty much no one else is interested in by now. They are trying to wear it like a badge of honour.
Get over it guys.

Yup, I talked with a reporter from there the other day, and he was very much up in arms about this and acting like HE was the devil incarnate. Certainly showed me where his bias lay...Marmite wrote:CD are behaving like excited children over this issue, running headlines and tweeting like crazy about a story pretty much no one else is interested in by now. It's all very precious. Where do they think they are working? Kansas?
It's ironic though that the much vaunted and mysterious Press Club of Cambodia is now tweeting like mad about the horrors of it. Where have they been while Khmer journalists have been suppressed?
Kudos to PPP and Khmer Times for not joining in with the hand wringing and self-pitying bollocks.

The *Overseas* Press Club of Cambodia, of whom, hilariously, Kheiu Khannarith is an honorary member? They've not posted a single tweet since February 2016.Marmite wrote:It's all very precious. Where do they think they are working? Kansas?

I'd imagine if it were a PPP or KT journalist in the spotlight, they'd be also engaging in their own respective handwringing.
