2nded. Train from Bangkok to Aranyaprathet at 5:45AM, the "Sunrise Train Ride" was simply glorious, in a ricky-ticky old train manner, no chilling aircon on this country adventure, on a proven old train, maintained satisfactorily over the years.
Open windows, open country, rice fields, cattle and playing children just outside.
Open cars selling different tasty Thai snacks in each train car, and a whole new set of friendly smiles if you choose to change cars.
'Twas a shame it all stopped at the Cambodian border, when (back then) I first saw humans used as cattle, drawing carts barefoot in the mud, Cambodian coolies to cart goods across the border.
'Twould be nice to just visit Immigration and Customs with just your passport and a bit of cash, then reboard the train with no silly tuk tuk hassle and head onwards to Phnom Penh.
Slow is the way to go, you don't miss the refreshing countryside, which is so worth it. Stretch out, sit on the sunny side of the train car, watch life go by just outside your window, chat, eat snacks, have a drink, move on and repeat.
Take a car if you've got no time, the trains are the way to go.
Maybe a dining car in the future (when supportable) would be very nice.
