I don't remember much previous input from the Chinese on the preservation of ancient local monuments. I'm hoping that they will do a good job of it.
http://www.phnompenhpost.com/national/c ... -thom-siteLy Vanna, director of the Department of Conservation of Angkor Monuments, said the project will include restoration of the northwest and southwest gates and wall enclosures, as well as brick and stone structures inside the central Phimeanakas temple.

It want's a South East Asian ally it can buy to fight its case when forums like ASEAN vote to issue group condemnations against Chinese policy on issues like human rights, territorial disputes with Vietnam or Philippines etc. This is common Chinese policy, and has already paid dividends at a recent ASEAN meeting when it was Cambodia who held out against issuing a joint communique denouncing China.
China pays Cambodia - both in the form of loans which leaders syphon off for personal gain and in the form of facile public works like this. It's peanuts for them. In return, they get Cambodia as a bitch.
China has done the same in places like Africa before. It's a cornerstone of their foreign policy.

Cambodia helps China by voting in their favor in ASEAN.

While much of what you say makes sense, I don't remember any ASEAN nation ever making human rights a priority, whatever they might pretend.Northern Monkey wrote:It want's a South East Asian ally it can buy to fight its case when forums like ASEAN vote to issue group condemnations against Chinese policy on issues like human rights, territorial disputes with Vietnam or Philippines etc.

Shit just got real.
''One of the world’s top energy importers, China, is set to roll out a yuan-denominated oil contract as early as this year. Analysts call the plan, announced by Beijing in September, a huge move against the dollar's global dominance''
''The new benchmark will reportedly allow exporters, such as Russia, Iran or Venezuela to avoid US sanctions by trading oil in yuan''

A very interesting article. I think the "gold" aspect of this will certainly add some confidence for future partners.spitthedog wrote:Shit just got real.

Economically, probably a southern deep water port in the Gulf of Thailand, connected by road through Laos and Cambodia to Yunnan province. The same, probably for Myanmar, with a port on the Bay of Bengal.
Militarily, a base or 3 in Cambodia would push those commie rivals in Hanoi between the mountains and the South China Sea (which belongs to China), especially if the USA or Russia finally get to reopen Cam Ranh.
More military presence in Myanmar would also squeeze in the oldest US ally in SE Asia, Thailand and perhaps make them take a look at which side the toast is buttered on.

Massive stalker
I don't think HE would allow a Chinese military base here. He's not stupid.
He may want to be chummy with then but allowing a military base would piss off too many neighbours who already have issues with them over the South China Sea - Vietnam being one.
At present Cambodia has good relations with all.
On a related note. I saw my first Chinese truck today. As in from China with Chinese number plates.

In SHV why are the casino operators taking over so many apartment blocks for their workers right in prime real estate areas rather than out of town abit?
I get the impression the China growth story is unsustainable and could be the next big debt crisis. Major Chinese cities now have the most expensive house prices in the world. It's like they are trying to corner the market on commodities and real estate. It will all end in tears at some point and a stopped clock is right at least twice a day.

They picked off a lot of the low hanging fruit, rooms/apartments that were normally $100-200/mth. Chinese would offer around double if they can get the whole building....spitthedog wrote:In SHV why are the casino operators taking over so many apartment blocks for their workers right in prime real estate areas rather than out of town abit?
Nicer apartments that were already fetching $300+ (before the China invasion) haven't been affected so much afaik.
The cheaper rooms that a lot of barang were living in (less than $200) have all been snapped up. I know a few expats that have $300+ apartments and non have have been told to move out.spitthedog wrote:In SHV why are the casino operators taking over so many apartment blocks for their workers right in prime real estate areas rather than out of town abit?

That graph shows you the reason the Chinese are investing outside of China. The returns on real estate are so small they are looking at buying overseas and Cambodia is the easiest newest market to buy shit loads of condos. SHV condo market has not even started yet unlike PP.
Expect a lot more high rise building to get started in the next five years especially after the election next year (I hear Khmer business folk are a bit jittery at the moment) where it will go crazy.
Call it money laundering if you like but remember the Chinese government do not like money leaving without checks. Also bear in mind that the China's foreign currency reserves have increased this year to something like $6 trillion.
