Named as 27 year old Canadian named Abby Gail Amisola and a 22 year old Brit named Natalie Jade Seymour at Monkey Republic guesthouse in Kampot.
All signs are pointed to an OD.

The presence of bunk beds leads me to believe it's a hostel, and there aren't many hostels in that neighborhood. The bed and ladder and curtains and light fixture and wall paint look similar to online photos of Monkey Republic, though I can't find a Monkey Republic photo of the purple bed in the photos.

Maybe someone should ask on the Kampot Noticeboard if two Money Republic guests died. I'm sure they'll allow a free discussion of that.

It almost sounds more like a joint suicide than an OD, unless they were taking drugs that were stronger than they thought or tainted; it could be bad drugs.

What sounds like a joint suicide? Was there a suicide note? That's dumb speculation. "Oh, two friends died at the same time, it must be suicide."Miguelito wrote:It almost sounds more like a joint suicide than an OD, unless they were taking drugs that were stronger than they thought or tainted; it could be bad drugs.

They overdosed. It happens to Westerners all the time in Cambodia, there's no suggestion in the reports it was intentional.

It's possible but unlikely. It's also not difficult to die on benzo's (valium, xanax, take your pick) and alcohol if you have a low tolerance to both, choking on your own vomit and what not. But two in one night, that's highly unlikely, probably another case of sampling the local heroin and not realising how pure it is here.Miguelito wrote:It almost sounds more like a joint suicide than an OD, unless they were taking drugs that were stronger than they thought or tainted; it could be bad drugs.
I have a theory about the heroin overdoses here, and especially why there are often Brits involved. I don't buy the line that they are all sold it as coke, anyone who has done coke, knows that isn't coke.
Recreational heroin users in the UK rarely inject, they usually smoke it off of foil (chasing the dragon) as heroin in the UK is base heroin (browns) from Afghanistan, it's not effective when snorted. The heroin here is China white, it's more refined and can only easily be snorted or injected. I think the Brits buy it, plan on smoking it. Then when that doesn't work they decide to snort it but have no direct reference point for snorting heroin other than cocaine, so they start with what would be considered a very small line of coke, and that's more than enough to cause an OD with pure heroin and no tolerance.

Yea, I was completely speculating and thinking out loud. I understand that Westerners OD here, but two at the same time is very rare. The last time it was two at the same time that I can remember were the two North Korean doctors that died from alcohol poisoning, and everyone certainly found that suspicious. What caught my eye here was the reference to prescription drugs scattered around.gavinmac wrote:What sounds like a joint suicide? Was there a suicide note? That's dumb speculation. Starkmonster's inputs are certainly more likely, and that's good background info I had no idea about.

Two thirtysomething British men died of "heart attacks" last year after going out to bars in Kampot:Miguelito wrote: The last time it was two at the same time that I can remember were the two North Korean doctors that died from alcohol poisoning, and everyone certainly found that suspicious.

Also last year, Martin Hale died and his buddy Dean McWilliams was taken to Calmette unconscious but survived:

And then in older news, pre-dating the North Koreans doctors, we have this:

The double death is not so unusual.
