If it is neo colonialism is PB a fan? Or is colonialism vs neo co like the difference between bearded men then and now?

Not sure, just semantics probably. But whatever the "correct" terminology may be, it's a form of colonialism and should get us concerned. The locals are certainly becoming very concerned. Anyway, the full effects of all this won't be known for some years to come as few of these Chinese backed mega projects have been completed. The only one that has, King Romans in Laos, is nothing in terms of scale compared to any of the ones in Cambodia or Myanmar, that are currently under construction.

I think you took my post as a correction/reference to terminology. It wasn't.black69wolf69 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 02, 2019 3:03 pmNot sure, just semantics probably. I'm also concerned about the fact that each of these projects brings in hundreds of thousands of Chinese to settle there. Did anyone ask the permission of the Cambodian people if they would like to have all these foreign Chinese as their neighbors? Imagine if hundreds of thousands of barang were transplanted to a new city built in China. Or Nigerians or Somalians or Indians for that matter. Would the Chinese be OK with that? If not, why do other countries have to accept hundreds of thousands of Chinese settlers in their countries?
None of this makes any sense. It's completely bizarre. No other country does anything this insane.

To tell the truth, The USA has been doing something this crazy for decades now, in the name of cheaper labor, with Mexicans coming over the border illegally by the millions. Almost no Americans want them there, but now they are around 20% of the population, talks about an invasion!!!

so if the Chinese build a hospital here with Chinese workers and run it with Chinese staff and charge everybody going there a good sum of money, where exactly is the aid in that? for me this is just a state run company building outlets all over the country to make money. they are of course free to do this but calling this aid is hypocritical.kinard wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 1:59 pmChina throws a lot of aid around the planet in the way of infrastructure, loans, the hospital ship etc... and no, you don't see them calling it in. The Chinese like to cultivate meaningful relationships in business and everything for the most part, runs smoothly, though they can be easily offended.YaTingPom wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 12:42 pmIt’s not in China’s benefit to force countries to be in their debt for life. If the countries struggle to pay off loans then it hampers development.
That’s the whole point of the Belt and Road - increase trade, invest in infrastructure so those countries are developed to then, yes you guessed it, by more Chinese products that are shipped by that same route.
It’s not fucking rocket science.
I recall someone saying to me that the Chinese will take over the world (in the economic sense)and we agreed it was inevitable, given China's economic growth and our growing dependency on her.
It could be termed passive imperialism, but I don't have a problem with it.

Two things. 1, that's not similar at all. Chinese moving to Cambodia is not the same as Mexicans moving to America - if you had said hundreds of thousands of Americans were setting up shop in a single Mexican city then that comparison would have been more accurate. 2, off topic, but what do you have against mis amigos mexicanos? As Anthony Bourdain famously said:Johnsell50 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2019 9:01 am

Full statementAmericans love Mexican food. We consume nachos, tacos, burritos, tortas, enchiladas, tamales and anything resembling Mexican in enormous quantities. We love Mexican beverages, happily knocking back huge amounts of tequila, mezcal, and Mexican beer every year. We love Mexican people—we sure employ a lot of them. Despite our ridiculously hypocritical attitudes towards immigration, we demand that Mexicans cook a large percentage of the food we eat, grow the ingredients we need to make that food, clean our houses, mow our lawns, wash our dishes, and look after our children. As any chef will tell you, our entire service economy—the restaurant business as we know it—in most American cities, would collapse overnight without Mexican workers. Some, of course, like to claim that Mexicans are “stealing American jobs.” But in two decades as a chef and employer, I never had ONE American kid walk in my door and apply for a dishwashing job, a porter’s position—or even a job as a prep cook. Mexicans do much of the work in this country that Americans, probably, simply won’t do.
We love Mexican drugs. Maybe not you personally, but “we”, as a nation, certainly consume titanic amounts of them—and go to extraordinary lengths and expense to acquire them. We love Mexican music, Mexican beaches, Mexican architecture, interior design, Mexican films.
So, why don’t we love Mexico?

This seems to be a bit more than Belt&Road. I mean military bases juxtaposed between Thailand and Vietnam? That is huge given Thailand's ties to the US. Vietnam has a long running dispute with China over island territory. Will putting a military base in close proximation to Vietnam's south move them closer to the US as a strategic partner? I miss the friggin SEA Globe mag. They always had a decent take on this. edited once for mulligan
