Dear friends and friends, relatives, acquaintances and unknowns! Please take a moment and let me tell you about a real matter of the heart.
As you probably know, I've been happily married to a Cambodian for some time.
Her name is Theany Sok and after numerous administrative procedures and never-ending bureaucratic obstacles, we have finally been able to fulfill our dream of being able to bring her and her two wonderful children to Germany.
The rest of her family lives in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, and keeps us up to date about the dire conditions there - which is very stressful for us all.
As far as the coronavirus is concerned, Cambodia has so far been largely spared (only 122 infections; 0 deaths; as of April 19, 2020) - but the whole country has been affected by the virus in another way. The biggest employers there are H&M, Puma, Levi’s and Adidas. Most of these have their factories in Phnom Penh, where mostly women have to work 60 hours or more a week in worst and health-threatening conditions to feed their families. But now they have lost this job because all orders from the aforementioned companies have been canceled. The average monthly wage is around $ 100 a month. In addition, the income from tourists has completely collapsed. The country was one of the poorest in the world before COVID-19 and the risk of death from the ever-increasing famine is increasing. Especially the homeless children are in a hopeless situation! My wife is of course particularly depressed about what is going on in her old homeland, so we decided to do something about it as soon as possible!
We would like to organize the careful distribution of packed lunches near the Royal Palace, Riverside (price is around € 2 per person for enough food and drinking water). Countless hungry street children and homeless people sit there and in the surrounding area every day, who previously had reasonably good prospects of not starving thanks to the influx of tourists and the accompanying pity. Since my wife originally worked in the catering industry there and managed more than 80 employees, she was able to use old contacts and the necessary know-how to organize a suitable place to cook and two old friends to implement our plan. Even back then, Theany campaigned for the food that was no longer sold in her two managed restaurants, not far from the Royal Palace, to be distributed to those in need in the evening.
The two currently unemployed women who would like to make these packages in the future will of course be appropriately compensated for this, since of course they too have to feed their families. The lunch packages will be changed daily and fresh, well-filling and healthy dishes will be provided.
We already contributed 500 euros and our two boys also contributed 30 euros from their piggy bank for this important cause. Unfortunately, most of the money is very scarce due to this economic disaster due to Corona. But what we all have anyway is a roof over our heads and no empty plates on the table in the evening. Unfortunately, poor people, especially homeless children and old, helpless people, are denied this.
Hence my big request to all of you that you also make your contribution to support this misery with a small donation, so that we can fight for a more humane situation on site until this bad crisis is over. Any amount, however small, can help - the Cambodians already secure € 2.50 a day against the daily hunger struggle and give them a real chance!
We assure you that every penny only reaches the needy. Of course, we will report to you at any time about the situation there and our help with photos and videos and document everything. We already have around 1000 meals, and the first lunch packages are to be distributed this Tuesday. We will be happy to keep you informed about this.
