Woman opens provincial library
From the feel good department.
A woman in Siem Reap has opened a library for the local people in the province. She hopes the library will promote books and encourage villagers to read more and she wants to help children learn how to read. The library is run by donations and has quickly become popular with the local children.
Cash donations can be made to ABA account SOTH BOPHA 000213847. Other items such as Khmer language books can also be donated, please contact them on phone number 077646419 if you wish to make an arrangement to send something by bus.

Love this. Hopefully the start of many, even if they are run as charitable enterprises.
Anything that encourages Khmer kids to read has to be welcomed.
Actually that applies to western kids too. Frankly, social media has killed kids’ imaginations.

This is awesome. There should be more of it. By the looks of the pic it doesn't look like much of a library but let's hope it can grow.
Blaming social media is looking for an excuse. If children aren't reading is generally a result of bad parenting.

Well done to her, that's a great initiative.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
I seriously do hope, something like this becomes available in Phnom Penh.
(And if available, please let me know, I could not find anything like this, except the "big" one in the backyard of the US embassy).

The kids should just get old iPads and read e-books. Hard copy books should no longer be published.

Of course.
Any idea how brand-new electronic stuff does look after 2-3 weeks (if it still works), when in the hands of kids (and even adults), who did grow up with just a basic living ?
My son has one of these and still fine after almost 2 years

It does have a huge cover that makes it unphased by drops. Sure, kids are more likely to break things but these should be handed down devices and easily replaced.

That's ruggedized kids stuff. It rules out regular e-readers, iPads and phones. Even with regular protection, those devices won't survive. Guess why I do know this

My kids have been using kindles for years. Those things are (almost) indestructible.

It's a great initiative. The only thing I would question is the timing. Library books are a great way to spread germs.
Up the workers!

Nothing replicates books and I agree, it is parental habits that instill reading in children, that's why Cambodia has double the challenge. I reckon I could count on one hand the number of times I saw a Cambodian of any age read a book for pleasure. It's a real shame and probably a fairly recent phenomenon. What will they do with the former public library next to Le Royal? Would be awesome if that was ever restocked and reopened.

I've always found it strange how little people read here. I've been in many villas and have rarely spotted a book case. However it's become more of a worldwide thing as children who have grown up with pads and smart phones etc don't often seem so keen on books. I visited the National Library about 10 or more years back and the National Archive behind. Contrary to popular belief the Khmer Rouge didn't destroy everything in those, they just wrecked the ground floors and left most of the other stuff upstairs. They seemed in a forlorn state when I was there, dusty and decaying files and books. Maybe it has had some work done since, I don't know but must drop by and have a look as I work nearby. The HS Library along 598 that's part of RUPP is one of the best libraries I've seen here, at least for obscure/ out-of-print books on Cambodia.Cam-pooh-cheer wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 5:18 pmNothing replicates books and I agree, it is parental habits that instill reading in children, that's why Cambodia has double the challenge.
