Sweden stops foreign aid to Cambodia - "no interest in democracy"
Sweden cancels its foreign aid to Cambodia. The government's interest to develop the country democratically is too low, says Sweden's Minister for International Development Cooperation Peter Eriksson.
The decision to cancel the financial aid to Cambodia will be taken on Thursday's cabinet meeting.
"Sweden has been very patient. It is difficult to work broadly with aid in a country where the interest for democracy and human rights is so low", said Sweden's Minister for International Development Cooperation Peter Eriksson.
Sweden has made a 200,000,000 SEK, circa 22 million USD, annual donation to Cambodia. The purpose has been to strengthen democracy in the country, improve the living standard of the poor and help them benefit from economic growth and environmental improvements.
But it has been difficult to get through in a country where the democratic development and the courts are moving in the wrong direction, according to Peter Eriksson.
"There have been problems in Cambodia for a long time. It is one of the countries in the world where the development has been the most negative. Independent press has been targeted, 32 radio channels have been shut down and leading members of the opposition have been stopped", he said.
In the future, Sweden will instead work to strengthen human rights and democracy in Cambodia through the so called regional strategy for Asia.
"Through the regional strategy for Asia there are possibilities to support people on a local level that are working for human rights", Peter Eriksson said.
The development towards decreased democracy has sped up during the Covid-19 crisis with the government passing its state of emergency laws which has restricted freedom of speech. Critics say that the government has used the law to silence the opposition.
"The Cambodian government does not show any interest to want to turn the development around and the possibilities for trustworthy cooperation with the Cambodian government is now deemed to be very low", the Swedish government said in its proposal.
During the recent years, China has increased its foreign aid to Cambodia. China is the largest financial donor to Cambodia and has also granted large loans for the Belt and Road Initiative. Cambodia's close ties to China makes it difficult for Cambodia to develop democratically according to Peter Eriksson.
"The Cambodian government has chosen the same path as China. The government is leaning closer to China and is becoming more authoritarian", he said.

Does China actually do foreign aid? I thought it all took the form of investment loans with a ban on revealing the rates of interest charged?
Up the workers!
Yeah, loans, just like in Africa. And once they can not pay off the loan (or even the interest), legally confiscate the property. Grab them at the B***s.kungfufighter wrote: ↑Thu Jun 11, 2020 5:38 pmDoes China actually do foreign aid? Practices pretty common, some 20+ years ago in Europe towards ignorant consumers, though nowadays forbidden.
The nasty Swedish government is just jealous because Cambodia outwitted them and only had two Corona deaths
Sweden is the country that used Cambodia's lax regulatory system to kidnap one of its own citizens here not that long ago.

The Swedish government has decided to focus the development cooperation with Cambodia on human rights, democracy and the rule of law. Ongoing activities in this area continue and new initiatives will be considered. Other areas of the current support will be phased out. The regional strategy for Swedish development cooperation in Asia and the Pacific includes Cambodia in various areas, not least protection of the environment and climate change.

But Volvo is Chinese owned? They should buy it back, with the money saved.
The Headline is hillarious: Sweden stops foreign aid to Cambodia - "no interest in democracy". Sweden is on it's way to become the next lapdog of the geopolitical masterplan of the US so nothing surprising. Their own demo crazy is falling apart aswell and eventhough they're not yet part of Nato they're already flying spy missions along the Belarus and Ukraine Border. See pic
Wasn't Sweden wasting it's aid in some of the most ridiculous projects?
If i remember they were paying millions of dollars for a think tank and research group on the well being of ladyboys as well as some strange countryside feminist empowerment projects.
Overall i don't understand why many western countries obsess over politically driven projects instead of building bridges, water towers, hospitals and other useful infrastructure.

The motives are suspect but the nett result is always to offer the little countries up to China, Russia etc. who have, err, no interest in democracy. Maybe it's less hassle that way.jackrossi wrote: ↑Thu Feb 16, 2023 10:17 amWasn't Sweden wasting it's aid in some of the most ridiculous projects?

Should be the UK next which also has no interest in democracy?
