Chinese online gambling companies return, trafficked workers are committing suicide
This year the Cambodian online gambling industry has been quiet for a long time to the outside world. However, a suicide attempt in Pursat on the 29th June has broken the silence. Behind the suicide attempt is some online gambling companies returning to Cambodia in a different way than in the past.
Unlike previous cities like Sihanoukville and Poipet where many vicious incidents have occurred, this incident happened in the Pursat province on the border between Cambodia and Thailand, and is located near the remote border. It takes about 5 hours to get out from the remote online gambling park.
Online gambling was banned in Cambodia on 1st January this year. Many online gambling companies moved from Sihanoukville and Poipet, but there are still many online gambling companies in provinces like Pursat.
Currently there is a lot of job advertising for "promotion and customer service" positions for Chinese companies in Cambodia. A person familiar with the situation said that online gambling is simply not going to be shut down. Some owners of online gambling companies have criminal records in China and cannot go back. They have made a lot of money from online gambling. Now the local relationship in Cambodia is very hard. Some online gambling companies began to turn to recruit Chinese.
New way under the epidemic: illegal immigration
After the pandemic outbreak, countries have strengthened border control, and it has become an urgent problem to solve for online gambling companies how to import new recruits.
At this time, some intermediary "snake heads" engage in illegal smuggling. They cooperate with online gambling companies. After the personnel of the online gambling companies contacted the new recruits in China, they passed on the information of the new staff to the intermediary. The intermediary is responsible for transporting people from China to Cambodia through Laos and Vietnam.
After arriving in Cambodia, the online gambling companies pay the intermediary fee at around 10,000 yuan per person (around $1,400). Due to the illegality of smuggling, many intermediaries use the term "dark ferry" when they contact new workers.
Some people familiar with the matter said that when the new workers enter the country from Vietnam, there are military police vehicles waiting at the customs. The workers are sent directly to the online gambling companies.
Due to the illegal nature of smuggling, there are many problems along the way. On June 7, 4 Chinese were arrested together with 4 Thai and Cambodian human traffickers when they were trying to smuggle them into the country.
The four Chinese men had been illegally brought into Cambodia through Banteay Meanchey. They were caught by patrolling border police. The border police confiscated 2 cars, 8 mobile phones, 1,660 Thai Baht and $80 US dollars.
The Chinese workers that are successfully smuggled into Cambodia are placed in quarantine for 7-14 days because the online gambling companies are afraid that they will import Covid-19.
The attempted suicide
According to reports, the employer of the online gambling company that attempted suicide, is nothing new. He had previously attempted to escape but was caught and locked into a "small black house". Another online gambling employee had succeeded suicide by jumping from the third floor and died on the ground.
In addition to Pursat, other border towns have also begun to see the return of online gambling workers. Some of them try to escape, but because the border towns are surrounded by mountains and are far from the city it is not easy to run away from an online gambling company.
A source told a reporter: "I hope to save those they have stolen from. So many people come here, live inhumanely, and some may even die here."
On Wednesday morning, Chinese migrant workers brought a petition to the Chinese embassy in Phnom Penh, hoping that the embassy would come forward to help recover the hard-earned money earned from working. They have been petitioning since April 27.
The embassy has sent representatives to discuss with representatives of the demonstrators to try to solve the problem.
Bringing the news. You stay classy, nas, Cambodia.
not a surprise that chinese criminals do not want to return to china and the online industry has gone underground...They found an online operation at a mango plantation not long ago.
No point in having your operation in the upper rooms of a casino in Sihanoukville.
Banning online gambling is not going to stop chinese from loving gambling....
just like the ships chinese get on to go out and gamble off shore.... something people did in the USA almost 100 years ago..
Even Nick and Nora ..The Thin Man was on a gambling ship in one of the old movies from the 30s..
These dudes have nothing to lose.
They will be executed if they are returned to china
