I always thought Rendang was more Indonesian than Malay but it’s not a debate worth escalating.
I can confirm that while there are one or two differences of opinion from some of the more fringe Islamic teachers, the vast majority of Muslims consider all seafood - fish and shellfish - to be haram, and the way it is killed is irrelevant.
Guest is right. It’s not fringe teachers - it’s schools of jurisprudence who debate this sort of thing to take into account lack of particular guidance or confusion over linguistics or historical context.
Bottom line is, few Muslims will say shellfish is haram because rather than get caught up in such debate, they will revert to the Quran which has no prescriptions on the issue.
Sorry Horace. You’re right. I wrote it badly.
To clarify cos I can’t edit it. The first haram should have been written as halal.
By far most Muslims will have no issues eating seafood. There is some high level debate by scholars around certain types of crab that can live on the land as well as in the sea, but to all intents and purposes it’s a non issue.
Muslims eat seafood and shellfish.
