Yesterday morning the Ministry of Health announced 15 new confirmed Covid-19 cases, 13 of which are Chinese. A number of people familiar with the matter said that most passengers on the flight were online gambling staff who transferred from the Philippines to Sihanoukville.
The other two patients were Cambodians who were returning from the United State and transited in Taiwan.
According to information released by the Ministry of Health, the 13 Chinese entered Cambodia from the Philippines on August 9 and are currently receiving treatment in hospital. The flight carried a total of 119 Chinese passengers that are currently isolated in a hotel.
The flight departed from Manila, Philippines, and arrived at the Phnom Penh international airport at 6:20 AM on August 9. According to informed sources, all passengers on the plane were required to provide negative tests before takeoff, and the tests showed that they met the departure requirements.
The person familiar with the matter said that the 13 Chinese passengers diagnosed on Monday will be re-examined later, but due to the serious situation in the Philippines, the test results are less likely to be controversial.
A person familiar with the matter told reporters that his friend was on the flight, but his test result was negative. He is currently in quarantine at a hotel and his online gambling company belongs to a large gaming group previously situated in Sihanoukville. They moved to the Philippines in December last year because of the ban on online gambling in Cambodia. In March this year, some people affected by the epidemic in the Philippines returned to Sihanoukville and set up an office in a famous internet investment park. "There was no accident at the time", said the source.
An employee working for a gambling company in the same area said that when some employees came to work in March, they did not have to stay in quarantine and went directly to live in the company dorms.
According to people familiar with the matter, because the Philippines has become more and more serious it has become difficult to work normally, so the company purchased flight tickets to organize some employees to return to Cambodia. They arrived in Phnom Penh on the morning of August 9. The test results came back on the 10th, and they started to work.
It is understood that the company still has about 1,000 employees in the Philippines. Currently, the Philippines is experiencing a serious epidemic, with nearly 7,000 new cases every day, with a total of nearly 140,000.
An online gambling employee working for the company expressed concern, saying "it's like buying mines". "Their company is in a building with hundreds of people working inside. What are the consequences of going in?"
