Xiao Jiang (pseudonym) reported that he was tricked to come to Cambodia to work with online gambling. After returning to China and getting off his plane, he was arrested by Chinese police for questioning. He then reported the supervisor and the boss of the online casino to the police.
Xiao Jiang said that he met someone on QQ a few months ago. After chatting a few times the other person invited him to Cambodia to work with game promotion, saying that staff was treated well. After several voice calls with the other person, Xiao Jiang was tricked by promises about high salary and finally made up his mind to go to work in a remote mountainous area in Cambodia.
Xiao Jiang told reporters that there are around 10,000 people working there. They work with fortune wheels, lottery tickets and fraud.
"When I left China, I thought it was a good opportunity. I did it because I wanted to. If I didn't want to do it I could leave. I didn't know when I got there that I would be completely controlled", Xiao said. He soon found out that the casino and recruitment promotion were different. Those who failed to perform were to be punished. "Sometimes they hit me on the butt with a stick", he said.
Xiao Jiang said that a female coworker was beaten after she was caught taking a photo in the casino. "She was smashed in her face", he said. Later, she was forced to work locked into a small dark room.
Xiao Jiang worked for the casino for around a month, but he couldn't perform well. "There are still many people who perform even worse than me, and they can't escape", he said.
The casino sold him to a Sihanoukville owned casino for 20,000 yuan ($3,000). After arriving to his new workplace, Xiao Jiang told them that he wanted to return to China, but he was beaten again. He was handcuffed and threatened with a gun.
Xiao Jiang's family had to pay 28,000 yuan ($4,100) compensation before the casino released him.
According to a casino worker, in addition to being resold by casinos like Xiao Jiang experienced, there are also intermediaries in Sihanoukville. They find people and pose as recruiters of a casino and drive to their home to pick them up. Generally the casino may pay 15,000 yuan ($2,200) for recruits, but it is possible to resell them for 25,000 yuan ($3,700).
Some casino workers also said that some casinos will pressure their employees mentally in order to control them. "If you return to China and you didn't make money you lose face. What are you going to tell your parents?" Some supervisors often brainwash people to make their employees work hard and work overtime until they die.
Casino workers who are caught trying to escape are detained in a small black room and they are beaten. Some casino workers try to only work for a few months to earn some money and then leave, but many of them end up on the Ministry of Public Security blacklists for engaging in criminal activities.
"Kindness is carefully packaged in the world of online gambling. People that go abroad to work with online gambling in Cambodia are trapped forever", said a casino worker.
After leaving the online casino in Sihanoukville, Xiao Jiang stayed in Phnom Penh for another week until his family were able to buy him a plane ticket back to China.
Xiao Jiang said that he spent 40,000-50,000 yuan ($6,000-$7,500) on this trip. "I have returned home, but I am really afraid", he said.
After Xiao Jiang arrived at the Beijing Capital International Airport, he was taken away by the police for questioning as soon as he got off the plane. He told them everything that he knew.
