No masks or social distancing during Water Festival
Some cities and attractions were crowded during the Water Festival. Unlike Pchum Ben, many seem to have forgotten about Covid-19 and are no longer wearing masks.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Tourism, during the 3 day period between October 29 and October 31, over 400,000 domestic and foreign tourists travelled across the country. The most popular destinations were Siem Reap, Kampot and Sihanoukville.
October 31st was both Water Festival and Halloween. Pub Street in Siem Reap livened up at 8pm and was crowded by 10pm. During Pchum Ben in the end of September, bars along Pub Street checked the temperature of guests when they entered and forced staff to wear masks while also restricting the total number of people. This time nobody was checking the temperature and although it was crowded, very few people wore masks.
The traditional boat races were cancelled during this year's Water Festival due to Covid-19, but people still gathered in front of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh and on the beaches in Sihanoukville.
Yesterday the Ministry of Health said that Cambodia had not found any new cases of Covid-19 for two consecutive days. They urged people to not take it lightly and to continue taking precautions. Many optimistic people believe that so far there are not many people in Cambodia who have been infected or died from Covid-19, so they do not take it seriously.

Bringing the news. You stay classy, nas, Cambodia.
It was great to see Siem Reap busy again, its been getting really quiet up here recently. As there has been no community transmission for months people are not bothered any more. The floods have killed more. The only thing Covid is hurting here is peoples wallets.

Wonderful to see folk out enjoying themselves.

How many will die because of the outbreak that will originate from that partying? Those businesses need to be fined heavily!

Well no. People must take responsibility for themselves. The businesses don't force people to attend. If locals or foreigners don't believe in covid then fuck it, it's on their heads. Don't be a dictator.
I'm beginning to agree with those who think it whipped around in December and January and Cambodia already has herd immunity.

It’s a nice thought, but it seems like if this were true it’d be easily proved with only a dozen random antibody tests.

If there are no cases of community transmission here after this, there is no native COVID in Cambodia...or...herd immunity hit here early and immunity protects the country. Either way, so far so good.

We talk about no one dying in Cambodia, we talk about there being a small number of cases found, mostly imported from flights arriving.
But has anyone actually been sick here? Or are almost all the 'cases' asymptomatic? I've never seen it reported anywhere that anyone had been ill apart from the 1 case that was in a critical condition for a while.
Based on the past 11 months of Covid spreading around the world, with potentially very few people even having symptoms here, there are still people who think loads of people are going to die from people hanging out together. What is this opinion based on because it doesn't seem to be based on reality?

Like SARs, I'm quite convinced by the research linking vitamin-D deficiency to death. Luckily here even in the monsoon season folks tend to get a shedload of vitamin-D naturally. Thus there isn't 'herd immunity' as such, but simply everyone has a much higher defence against corona virus strains naturally by virtue of not being vitamin-D deficient.
The counter would be why somewhere like Florida isn't the same - I can only think of those "retirement communities" where old folk are perhaps kept out of the sun all day, unlike elderly Khmer who get a good dose in the early morning sun + sunset hours.
