Are high-end condo landlords refusing to rent to Chinese people?
On November 6, Li Gang and his interpreter went to 240 Apartment in Phnom Penh planning to rent an apartment. The building looked very nice and the location was good.
When Li Gang walked into the lobby wanting to ask for more details a staff member asked him what he wanted. The translator told him that Li Gang was interested in renting an apartment to which the staff replied that they do not rent to people from China and India and kicked them out.
Li Gang said that because of the language barrier he had spoken to his translator directly who had talked to the condo staff. "Our translator is Sino-Khmer. If he hadn't talked to the staff on my behalf, I guess I would not even have gotten through the door" he said.
240 Apartment rents out luxury apartments ranging from 1 bedroom 70 sqm to 4 bedroom 284 sqm. The building has public facilities and services including a cafe, physiotherapy and a spa.
Li Gang said that the incident only took a couple of minutes. "I was confused when I left. I thought what year is this? Are there ethnic or national restrictions on the market?" he said.
He later posted his experience on social media. Some said that high-end apartments with better management and facilities in Phnom Penh do not rent to Chinese people. "We are refused in a more polite way. They will say that all the apartments are vacated or they will make up restrictions about work permits or say that they only rent to tenants who are fluent in English", a commentator said.
A landlord recently complained on Facebook that a Chinese tenant had skipped the bill, vandalized and trashed the house.

Bringing the news. You stay classy, nas, Cambodia.
They don't let 'em into my building and it's pleasant but not high end.
We've had an Indian and Burmese.

He looked at a building that is half owned by relatives of staff attached to the US embassy overlooking the US ambassador's residencies that is already under DOJ scrutiny as to why it was allowed to be built by realatives of Embassy staff relatives who solely built the property with the intent to rent half to building to the Embassy because it overlooks the residence....and he wondered why he wasn't let in.
This is less racism and more them trying to maintain high rent in what is a shitty building.

How does banning Chinese who have money to pay the rent help them maintain high rent? It sounds like racism to me. If an Alabaman tells blacks "You can't eat at my lunch counter because it's bad for business" that's generally considered racist.NoChinx wrote: ↑Tue Nov 10, 2020 12:07 amHe looked at a building that is half owned by relatives of staff attached to the US embassy overlooking the US ambassador's residencies that is already under DOJ scrutiny as to why it was allowed to be built by realatives of Embassy staff relatives who solely built the property with the intent to rent half to building to the Embassy because it overlooks the residence....and he wondered why he wasn't let in.

Technically speaking, I doubt they’re “racist”. I’m sure they would like an ethnic Chinese that’s American or Singaporean rent, they just don’t want people from mainland China as they’ve experienced, time after time, those Chinese nationals damaging apartments and being noisy and disrespectful neighbors.superguest wrote: ↑Tue Nov 10, 2020 1:09 amHow does banning Chinese who have money to pay the rent help them maintain high rent? Im surprised the radicals havent moved on a usa embassy from that building.
Theyve all gone soft on usa embassies, for now.

They should apply this logic at the border. Cambodia is quickly turning into a Chinese province. Has money trumped Khmer pride?
Mainland Chinese businesses here like
restaurants, etc are known for turning whiteys away. Why shouldn't landlords have the option to turn them away? Chinese have a bad reputation of disrespecting properties..you reap what you sow.

What I learned in China is that racism is something that happens to Chinese. They simply accept various truisms about other natives.
Indians, for example, despite having smelly armpits, they quite like because they are very good at accountancy.

Au contraire - has Khmer pride ever trumped money?Pooh Bear wrote: ↑Tue Nov 10, 2020 10:03 amThey should apply this logic at the border. Cambodia is quickly turning into a Chinese province. Has money trumped Khmer pride?

I am shocked by this thread. You mean that building is finally finished?

Who would have ever thought that white people in Shitsville would end up being viewed as high class?
It just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
