Why is this news now? It's been going on for 10 years at least at the cement factory near Kompong Trach. I remember another karst on the road approaching Sihanoukville which was already near obliterated back then.

It's been going on since at least the early 60s when the Chinese financed a plant in Kampot, which was destroyed in the war.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

It's been going on for over 100 years in Kampot.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Thu Nov 19, 2020 4:46 pmIt's been going on since at least the early 60s when the Chinese financed a plant in Kampot, which was destroyed in the war.
There's a restored old fashioned kiln site near Kampong Trach which looks for all the world like arches under a railway line as you may see in London, but used be filled with clay, laterite, hi grade and medium grade limestone and burned to make cement clinker.
AFAIK there are 5 cement production licenses in the country; CMIC, K Cement, Conch and Thai Boon and one other shitty small china one whose names escape me. No more to be granted.
They each have one Karst for quarry purposes - 4 around Kampot/K Trach and one (Conch) in Battambang.
Quarrying (both legal and otherwise) for roadstone and gravel is a far greater threat to the Karsts of Cambodia than the cement industry.
Trashy article imho

It's from a biologist's perspective, and they do have a point that there could be unknown species on those hills. I've often wondered how many people have ever managed to climb those steep cliffs.

Yeah, true.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Thu Nov 19, 2020 6:42 pmIt's from a biologist's perspective, and they do have a point that there could be unknown species on those hills. I've often wondered how many people have ever managed to climb those steep cliffs.
However, there's no source of limestone in the country like those Karst formations.
They run diagonally from mekong delta through Cambodia and up through saraburi in Thailand and on into Myanmar.
Practically all cement in South Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar comes from this line of Karst formations.

There are some more karst formations West of Strung Trang as your going to TBM.And about half way between Poipet and Palin right on the border. The area they call Malay.
If they’ve never been viewed or “discovered” then...?Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Thu Nov 19, 2020 6:42 pmIt's from a biologist's perspective, and they do have a point that there could be unknown species on those hills. I've often wondered how many people have ever managed to climb those steep cliffs.

The ones by Poipet and Pailin are part of the same range, if you will, that I referenced in my earlier postredneck wrote: ↑Fri Nov 20, 2020 8:53 pmThere are some more karst formations West of Strung Trang as your going to TBM.And about half way between Poipet and Palin right on the border. The area they call Malay.

Phnom Malai is between Poipet and Pailin, it was a stronghold for KC supporters for decades. I didn't realize there were karsts that far west. It's crazy thinking how they emerged from the sea bed.

Not a geologist, so no idea what most of this means, but, cool, I guess

I was out for a ride yesterday. They are really taking apart some of once-tree-covered hillsides on the road from the airport in Sihanoukville to Ream... And already across the way toward Otres, too. Ugly as sin. Concrete Cambodia, bleck! No thanks... (Gimme a mountain road in Sri Lanka through the tea gardens, wow...)
