Will Coronavirus mutations cause Cambodia to extend entry quarantine to 21 days?
Cambodia has confirmed 3 cases of Covid-19 mutations and the global spread of the virus has increased by 70% after mutation.
On Monday afternoon, the Ministry of Health announced that three imported cases of mutated Covid-19 infection had been found. Among the three patients was a 28 year old man and 23 year old woman of Indian nationality. They arrived in Cambodia on February 3 after departing from India and transiting through Singapore.
The third patient is a 26 year old woman of Chinese nationality who arrived in Cambodia on February 7 after transiting through South Korea. The notification stated that the Chinese passenger departed from China but journalists found that she departed from Dubai, not China.
The Ministry of Health first released news of the aforementioned three patients on February 9, stating that they had been admitted to the hospital for treatment.
One week later on Monday afternoon, the Ministry of Health issued an emergency notice stating that the three patients were infected by the B.1.17 Covid-19 mutation. This mutation first appeared in the UK on September 20, 2020. It's estimated to be over 70% more contagious than the previous widespread Coronavirus strain. It infects children as easy as adults and so far 300 cases have been confirmed globally.
The South African Covid-19 mutation B1351 has also been found in Thailand. B1351 spreads faster than the original Covid-19 virus and has a higher viral load.
On Monday, at the Thailand epidemic prevention and control press conference, a spokesperson said that a man had imported the mutant virus from Tanzania. The discovery may cause the mandatory quarantine upon entering Thailand to be extended from 14 to 21 days. "The aim is to provide sufficient observation time for the new Coronavirus detection team", the spokesperson said.
On Monday, Prime Minister Hun Sen issued an emergency speech on the current epidemic. He said that the smuggling of workers between Cambodia and Thailand posed a serious threat to the country's epidemic prevention and control. Therefore, he ordered a severe crackdown on illegal border crossing and quarantine evasion. The fine was increased to 1 million Riel ($250).
Will Cambodia follow Thailand's lead and extend mandatory quarantine to 21 days?
Reporters interviewed many people in the tourism industry. They said that if the mutated virus is only imported from abroad, perhaps the government will not consider extending the quarantine period to 21 days. "The border has been strictly inspected for illegal entries from Thailand to Cambodia, but if there are cases where infection occurs, it is difficult to say whether the mandatory quarantine time will be extended or not."
According to recent booking information from travel agencies, due to the extension of visa processing time ahead of the Chinese New Year, a large number of Chinese people may come to Cambodia at the end of February.
Bringing the news. You stay classy, nas, Cambodia.

The South African variant, named “B1351”, requires closer monitoring as it is known to spread more quickly, which could worsen the outbreak in Thailand, said the CCSA’s assistant spokesperson, Apisamai Srirangson.
“We might need to increase the mandatory quarantine for returnees from Africa to 21 days,” she said

Lets hope it ONLY applies to Africa, ( no great loss)
Otherwise the 3.5 million tourists they are hoping for this year will drop to under 100,000
and even that is dreaming
