A law was passed today by the National Assembly to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and other dangerous infectious diseases.
In accordance to the new law, those who escape Covid-19 quarantine or testing shall be imprisoned for between 6 months to 3 years and fined ៛2,000,000-៛10,000,000 ($500-$2500).
Those who avoid treatment or escape from treatment facilities shall be punished by imprisonment between 1-5 years and a fine of ៛5,000,000-៛20,000,000 ($1250-$5000).
If the escapee causes Covid-19 transmission to others they shall be imprisoned for 5-10 years.
Minister of Health Mam Bunheng said that this law is necessary to establish a stronger and more comprehensive legal framework to fight against the spread of Covid-19. It also creates an important foundation and readiness for the government to fight the epidemic more effectively.
According to the Ministry of Information as of today there have been a total of 932 cases of Covid-19 in Cambodia, 489 have been cured and 442 are being treated in hospital.
