Chulalongkorn University virology specialist Dr Yong Poovorawan said in a Facebook post on Saturday that the Covid-19 strain recently found in Bangkok matches perfectly with a Cambodian strain.
“The latest strain found in Thailand does not match 100 per cent with the British or other strains, but displays a 100 per cent match with the Cambodia strain,” he said.
Has the British strain mutated in Cambodia? The new strain has supposedly been spreading in Cambodia for 6 weeks.
Dr Yong said on Friday that it was unlikely that the Cambodian strain was brought through official border crossings due to the 14 day quarantine requirement on entry. He speculated that it had been brought to Thailand by migrant workers and people illegally sneaking across the border.
The new strain is estimated to be 1.7 times more infectious.
Latest Covid-19 wave in Thailand 'likely caused by Cambodia strain'
Is there a Cambodian strain of Covid-19?

https://www.ucanews.com/news/pandemic-t ... urge/92073Yong Poovorawan, a senior virologist with the faculty of medicine at Chulalongkorn University, said the UK variant could have arrived in Thailand by overland from Cambodia, adding that the first UK variant was detected on Feb. 15.
The UK variant, he said, was found in Chinese and Indian people who entered Thailand from Cambodia in February.
In Phnom Penh, that prompted one government-friendly newspaper to declare: “Blame game over origins of UK Covid variant in Thailand, Cambodia suspected.”
Authorities have since said the same UK variant as detected in Cambodia was discovered amid a Covid cluster found in pubs in a Bangkok tourist district last week.
Despite its closure, the land border is porous and illegal crossings have been a major headache for both countries ever since the pandemic erupted about 14 months ago, with about 90,000 unemployed Cambodian workers trying to return home earlier this year.
Officials are also warning that a new wave of people smuggling had emerged, run by agents in Bangkok seeking to exploit cheap labor from people who are in desperate need of money, the direct result of the economic impact from the pandemic.
Bringing the news. You stay classy, nas, Cambodia.
Genetic mutations can and do happen anytime, anywhere, but if they have any phenotypic 'selectable' effect - not all do (see mom, I DID learn something in Biol 101), and if that effect is bad for humans, it is more likely, statistically, to arise where lots and lots and lots of replication is going on.
Cambodians are currently very concerned about the progression of the Feb 20 Event, and not all Covid-19 positive people are tested, but I think it is clear that Cambodia doesn't yet resemble Brazil, South Africa, India, UK, or USA.
Certainly a Cambodia strain is possible, but with statistics against its probability, I'll wait for more research to back up Dr. Yong Poovorawan's claims.

But, talking of improbable speculative stuff, I'm quite sure the yet to be proved significant "Cambodia Strain" derives from a clever virus back cross from a Covid-19 infected Cambodian who was already infected with the normal, older, Covid type virus endemic in bat eating Cambodians for many years.... Or not.
Ive seen reported in the last week that several new mutations are occurring everyday that are yet to be discovered, mostly in india.

In Spain the kent/ UK variant is now responsible for 90% of new infections. However, the Brazilian, South African, and a Ugandan one are also present. In the first wave it was the old catching and dying now in the fourth wave it is affecting a lot more younger people.
Stay safe people and if you are in doubt about getting jabbed perhaps this article will sway your mind.

k440, something to do when you're pissed.
The diagram shows, there are (multiple) Cambodian strains.
The relevancy is, are these strains more virulent than the current UK variant. No news about that.

Considering there is COVID-10 here, that the PCR tests cannot differentiate, I would suspect other non-deadly variants floating around potentially derived from any of those.
It is a normal feature of virus biology to mutate into more transmissible forms that are less deadly.
