Sports Ringers- Cambodian nationality for foreign athletes
On the back of yesterday's news of Cambodia's starting XI for international cricket:

Earlier news of Brazilian martial artist Thiago Teixeira:

And reports that a pair of Ukrainian judo competitors have been given Cambodian citizenship:
https://malaya.com.ph/news_sports/cambo ... judo-bets/
Now US basketball players have been given the N,R,K treatment and allowed to compete:
Host Cambodia is going all-out for the men’s basketball tournaments of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games which might spell trouble for Gilas Pilipinas’ bid for redemption.
For the 3×3 tournament which begins on Saturday, Cambodia will field three naturalized players along with one local.
Darrin Dorsey and Brandon Peterson beef up Cambodia’s 3×3 team, along with Sayeed Pridgett.
Dorsey and Peterson are teammates in Jordan club Orthodox Amman, which competes in the West Asia Super League.
Peterson, 32, is a 6-foot-8 big man while Peterson, 35, is a 6-foot-2 guard.
Pridgett is a 6-foot-6 product of Montana who currently plays for Greece’s Karditsa.
Completing the squad is Tep Chhorath.
Cambodia is slotted in Group B with Singapore, Malaysia, and defending champion Thailand.
All three naturalized players are expected to suit up for the 5-on-5 tournament as well.
There will be numerous Cambodian-American players that will join the trio, namely 6-foot-8 Dwayne Morgan, 6-foot-9 Darius Henderson, and 6-foot-4 Oscar Lopez Jr.
Cambodia is grouped with Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore in the pool phase.

Bringing the news. You stay classy, nas, Cambodia.
I’m not sure this bothers me that much: if fast tracking citizenship helps bed in sports into Cambodia that might otherwise not get a look in, all well and good. Hopefully any success these sports get will encourage more locals to take it up.
And it’s not as if the major powers haven’t indulged in ringers over the years. Zola Budd is a good example.

Yeah, but. Zola Budd had a legal claim to British citizenship. Maybe all these guys had a grandparent from Cambodia, not impossible.S Rojack wrote: ↑Sat May 06, 2023 7:51 pmI’m not sure this bothers me that much: if fast tracking citizenship helps bed in sports into Cambodia that might otherwise not get a look in, all well and good. I saw a photo of the Cambodia female volleyball team earlier. There aren’t too many Srey Mao’s and Sophea’s in there.
It all seems a bit too blatant.

It has been a popular trend on Khmer social media- mostly good natured. Cambodians do have a good sense of humor.
ខ្មែរហើយនៅ?
Already Khmer!
And the cricket team has got attention.

Sucks if you’re the native born Cambodian who’s trained their whole life for a competition, only to get sidelined by some rando that arrived last Thursday.S Rojack wrote: ↑Sat May 06, 2023 7:51 pmI’m not sure this bothers me that much: if fast tracking citizenship helps bed in sports into Cambodia that might otherwise not get a look in, all well and good. Gilas Pilipinas Women hurdled one of their two biggest tests in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games’ 3×3 basketball tournament on Sunday at Morodok Techo National Stadium, Elephant Hall 2 in Cambodia.
The Filipino quartet of Jack Animam, Afril Bernardino, Janine Pontejos, and Mikka Cacho outlasted the hosts, 21-20 (9:55.9), to advance to the Final against Vietnam later in the day.
Bernardino capped her masterful eight-point performance by zipping through the lane and scoring the final-clinching point with 4.1 seconds to spare.
Cambodia, along with Vietnam, was seen as one of the favorites to win the two-day meet as it fielded an all-naturalized crew.
Unlike their men’s team that had one local, Cambodia decided to field an all-naturalized crew composed of 5-foot-7 University of Southern Mississippi product Brittany Dinkins, 5-foot-9 University of Tennessee big Meighan Simmons, 6-foot-1 Washington State bruiser Mariah Cooks, and 5-foot-8 Stony Brooks alum Kim Hanlon.
All four will be part of Cambodia’s 5-on-5 team as well along with Cambodian-American players Jasmine Kong, Sima Suon, and Izzy Om.
Gilas Women will face Cambodia on May 10 in the cup-style tournament.
For the meantime, the Filipinas will now focus on stopping Vietnam’s Truong twins in their quest of regaining gold.
Vietnam defeated the Philippines in the pool phase, 21-19 OT.[

Another one: Margot Garabedian (now renamed Morakot). Politely described by other regional news sources as "Margot Garabedian, a naturalized Cambodian since March this year with French lineage" (With that name, likely French/Armenian)
https://www.spin.ph/multisport/sea-game ... 5-20230508
https://triathlon.org/athletes/profile/ ... garabedian
PHNOM PENH—Kim Mangrobang found naturalized Cambodian Margot Garabedian a tough customer on Monday at the Kep Beach Resort that ended the Filipino’s string of gold medals in women’s triathlon at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games.
Garabedian quickly rose out of the water in the 750-meter swim, kept Mangrobang at bay in the 20km bike before sealing victory in one hour, five minutes and 34.2 seconds after a steamy 5km run.
Mangrobang, the three-time champion since the 2017 edition of the Games in Malaysia, reached the beach running third, slowed down in the bike sequence and chased Garabedian in the footrace.
But the former French triathlete, ranked 190th in world triathlon, fed on her advantage following the second transition and arrived at the finish arc ahead of everybody else.
Fresh from defending her title in women’s duathlon on Sunday, Mangrobang checked in nearly two minutes (1:07:24) after Garabedian, a seventh placer at the World Junior Championships in 2014.
Singapore’s Louisa Marie Middleditch placed third (1:07:24) in the swim-bike-run race of endurance.

Mercenaries in Cambodia
A rule to allow any player, with or without affinity, to represent a country on the basis of a passport has opened the floodgates for mercenaries to desecrate the spirit of sportsmanship at the ongoing SEA Games in Cambodia. The norm of enlisting only one naturalized player for a national basketball team is now out the window. The host country has spared no cost in trying to collect gold medals like they were for sale in the open market and foreign athletes who probably had never visited Cambodia before the SEA Games are shamelessly wearing the national colors for money.
Last January, POC president Mayor Bambol Tolentino disclosed Cambodia’s devious plan to recruit foreign athletes for the SEA Games. In the Philippines, it’s a process to naturalize anyone because the law requires approval from Congress and Senate. But in other countries, it’s like issuing a driver’s license without a test and the wait could be overnight.
The downside of loading up on naturalized players is they don’t compete for national pride. Take, for instance, Cambodia’s 3x3 women’s squad of four American tourists – 5-7 Brittanny Dinkins of University of Southern Mississippi (played in seven countries before landing in Phnom Penh), 6-1 Mariah Cooks of Washington State University, 5-8 Kim Hanlon of Stony Brook University and 5-9 Meighan Simmons of University of Tennessee. Cooks and Hanlon are Women’s Premier Basketball Association (WPBA) veterans while Simmons was New York’s third-round pick in the 2014 WNBA draft. After the imports lost to the Philippines, 21-20 in the semis, they showed no heart in bowing to Indonesia, 21-15 in the playoff for third. The gold medal was lost and the bonus that would’ve come with it so who cared for third place? They didn’t play for Cambodia, they played for themselves and a paycheck.
Cambodia’s 3x3 men’s team, in contrast, got the job done. Three imports played the entire 10-minute final without rest, leaving the sole native Tep Chharath cooling his heels on the bench. The mercenaries were 6-2 Darrin Dorsey, 35, of NAIA school Dakota Wesleyan University, 6-8 Brandon Peterson, 32, of Arkansas State and 6-5 Sayeed Alkabir Pridgett, 24, of the University of Montana. When Dorsey and Peterson signed to play for a Jordan club team in the West Asia League last February, there was no indication they would suit up for Cambodia. Before playing in the SEA Games, the journeymen had seen action in 12 different countries.
The Philippines will play Cambodia 5x5 tomorrow and the word is the hosts won’t only field Dorsey, Peterson and Pridgett but also 6-8 Dwayne Morgan, 27, of UNLV, 6-9 Darius Henderson, 25, of University of Massachusetts at Lowell and 6-4 Oscar Lopez, 26, of DePaul and Central Michigan University. Lopez’ mother Thon Khun is Cambodian so he passes as a heritage player. Morgan came from leagues in Hungary, North Macedonia and Mexico while Henderson’s claim to linkage is Lowell was a settlement of Cambodian refugees in the 1970s and a Cambodian professor in school Hai Pho established the Indo-Chinese Refugee Fund with his wife Lan Tuyet Pho.
Cambodian Joshua Bo Noung, who played high school basketball in the US, couldn’t land a spot on the national team because of the naturalized overload. “I am a little embarrassed for Cambodians,” he said. “Because this is not our way to resort to, not giving our own people a shot at competing. They resort to this for immediate success but they have to understand the pride in representing the people of Cambodia all around the world. Losing is part of learning to become better. Winning without integrity isn’t winning.”

Timor-Leste’s foopball team had a recent controversy in the AFC. After being told to stop playing so many quick-passport Brazilian ringers, they produced some fake birth certificates and got caught. They’re banned from this year’s AFC tournament but were allowed to compete at the (AFC-affiliated) SEA games.

Three Cuban volleyball players working at Visakha Volleyball Club have acquired Cambodian citizenship and are part of the Cambodian men's volleyball national team. All three have been named to train in China in preparation for the 19th Asian Games in China. The three Cuban players are Henry Pelayo Bernal, Lester Armando Sanchez and Raciel Herrera.
Ang Serey Piseth, Vice President and Secretary General of the Volleyball Federation of Cambodia, confirmed in an interview with reporters on August 26 that the inclusion of foreign players in the Cambodian men's volleyball team means they have the ability to help as part of the Cambodian team become stronger.
"After the SEA Games in Vietnam, more than 10 of our athletes were eliminated. "Recently, three foreign athletes gained citizenship. The only reason is to encourage our Cambodian athletes, who are still almost willing to work harder." This is the confirmation of Mr. Ang Serey Piseth.
He added that the elimination of old players and the replacement of some new players and the composition of the three Cuban players to make Cambodian volleyball more prosperous.
The Vice President of the Volleyball Federation continued that the Volleyball Federation of Cambodia is happy to welcome talented and hearty athletes to join the national team as long as the patriotic Cambodian. "If we are strong among the strong, then the national team seat will be available for us and we must work harder for those who are not yet in the national team."
The three foreign Cubans who joined the Cambodian national team and are part of the Cambodian national volleyball team include Henry Pelayo Bernal, 22, who is 209 cm tall; Lester Armando Sanchez Cabrera, 33, 184 cm tall, second receiver or jumper, and Raciel Herrera, 25, 197 cm tall.
