That part of snooky is fucked.
The rubbish always seems to accumulate at that end of the beach and it is generally tatty and tawdry down there. And that groper place is usually empty.
Then there are the constant power cuts and the rumours of huge increases in power prices to come.
Occateul has really gone downhill over the years with dirty water and infestations of flies and backpackers.

ken, ken, ken, just because you don't understand the marketing strategy for tourists doesn't mean it isn't a good one.Kingdom of Wonder. The motodops and tuk-tuk mafia are part of the plan too, to give visitors an exotic experience.ken svay wrote:That part of snooky is fucked.

We stayed there once. Great rooms! A lovely secret garden in the middle. I think we paid about $15 for the rooms, which seemed a little steep, but it was a big holiday...

no idea if it's true but i heard yesterday in some areas of downtown snooky the price for KW switched this month from 700 riel per KW to 1200 !
that's a whopping 70% increase !
agree the beach is becoming a dump especially the area of the Pier which nobody ever dare to clean up.
must be embarassing for new tourists arriving there after a long trip and the first thing they see is a pile of garbage and rubbish floating on the water !
as for Hibiscus, it was almost always empty, don't know why as the nearby hotels and guesthouse are always packed, maybe it's just too big for Occheuteal and they should split in two ? light were always dark too giving the impressioni it was closed, no music and no people around, looking like a ghost place, and prices were not cheap.
my best wishes but i can't see how it can be sold for 165K $ !
the two hotel next to Hibiscus are always full any time of the year and so is their restaurant, no matter if they're horribly overpriced, to relaunch a place so big as Hibiscus it would take a huge investment, not to mention there are a couple new hotels opening up soon in the same road.
i've the feeling the whole Beach Road is reaching its limits, there's just not enough tourists to justify so many hotels and guesthouses.
the whole outlook on snooky has been too overoptimistic in my opinion, what we're seeing now is just a polarization where the place to be is now Occheuteal while downtown and victory are left to cheap khmer tourists.

rubbish, shit water, noise, generators' noise, mosquitoes, and rough backpackers, that's what a tourist will see there most of the year.
and what the authorities are doing to improve the situation ? absolutely nothing, and same for the power cuts.
it seems they just don't give a shit about making snooky viable to attract tourists, maybe their grand plan is only about making it a big port with casinos and hookers and focusing on the outer islands leaving the beach as a dump.
after all for the khmer standards it must well above their standards, these guys just can't understand foreign tourists.

The hotel has just been sold. The new owners are demolishing it in May, to make way for a new build hotel
as someone above said its a great location but a tired hotel, probably true. the businessmen with the cash and vision to invest here will do ok. and all you moaning negative people can go and teach English or whatever
stop by for a meal before its gone. the lamb shish is excellent

I remember vividly the last meal I had there. It took so long to come I was leaving by the time the first of our dishes finally showed up. The owner was just sat at the bar with cigarette in one hand and very large red wine in the other looking like the most stressed person in SHV while failing to take any form of control or responsibility for the chaos around him. I have never seen so many people leave a restaurant.
Went and ate at Coolabah instead. Had a marvellous meal.

Years ago i was sitting in a well-known girly bar, the floor was always filthy, and it worried me a little, so easy to clean.PhotoKhmer wrote:after all for the khmer standards it must well above their standards, these guys just can't understand foreign tourists.
Then I realised the Oz owner was just trying to make certain people feel at home.

towards the end of last year the government was going to widen to about 7 meters each side of that road. It got put off. for now. but they intended to take several meters out of the front of an awful lot of the buildings on both sides of the roads,
the local STA group that cleans the beach is also looking into the rubbish around the pier.
power cuts are now quite rare down here and usually dont last longer than an hour.

Sometimes I just got to put in my two cents. As always, people who don't know shit about the hotel business in Sihanoukville, only idiots and whore mongers call it Snooky, have the most to say about it. That place for sale sure was a dump.
What do you expect for $15/night. The subsequent French owner died a year or so ago. The restaurant manager was just the caretaker until it was sold again. Serendipity is not that bad any more. The problem is that you got two kinds of category hotels there, the original backpackers flophouses, and the more upscale hotels. The area is undergoing a change and anybody who invests there is doing the right thing. Even the pier will get cleaned up. Just wait.
Ken, you are wrong about Ochheuteal. When was the last time you were there? We had the last power cut for about 15 minutes before the New Year (international). There is new construction going on all over the place. Millions of dollars are spent by the private sector to spruce the place up. It is not a nice sight right now but wait until next November. People who don't have a penny to their name should just shut up about money matters. My hotel is on Ochheuteal and we have been doing extremely well since November.
