I've bought lots of 2nd hand vehicles and have been mostly happy with them, but I'vs never before even considered buying a 2nd hand air conditioner, I couldn't see much point.
Now, with most Hotels having serious hard times, buying 6 air-cons 2nd hand might (??) make sense. I realize I an installer would need to refill the coolant, and clean them etc, but what do readers think, would the savings on "like new 2nd hand" be worth the risk, or better to just get new?
Foolish or sensible to Buy air conditioners 2nd hand
I have bought 2nd hand and they have given a few years of life but I am in a rented property and usually doing some sort of deal with the landlord.
If it was my own house, I'd by new for the better efficiency, reliability, warranty etc. It's worth it for the relatively small price difference.

i would stay will the new ones for mainly the efficiency value,i just had some new cabins built on my riverboat and installed new units for this reason
I have one more ac unit I want to replace when I get around to it. Keep getting these ads on Facebook flogging second hands from Japan and have been thinking about it. But I think 1984 and Cob are right. Buy new. It's potluck with the second hand stuff.

foolish. not an arm and a leg new. used is for hostels, slumlords.
Foolish.
It's the price versus cost ratio.
Get new.

Yes, that's always been very much my feeling too.
The problem is, I'm cheap. Cheap and a bit worried about the near term future. I currently own a bunch of ac units in a building I rent, but in a few months I'm moving into a larger new building I own. Before Covid, I thought I'd move a few of the newest ac units toss the rest, and buy new. In the current economy, it is tempting to toss less and move more.
Or..., I wondered if I could, for example, walk through a NEW empty hotel in Siem Reap, and buy on the spot, a good number of new/like new, excellent quality, 2019 a/c units, maybe $100-250/unit (???) for machines that cost 400-650 just 6-12 months ago. That might make more sense than reinstalling the older machines I currently own.
Allowing the owner to save Face somehow is important. No one likes their face rubbed in it, and the situation IS shitty all around. Besides, if they are rich, they'd rather have an expensive empty hotel than a measly $2-3k in their pocket for the holes in the walls.
The "Don't do it!" comments above are correct. This isn't some win:win, with me getting perfect inexpensive machines, and the hotel owner getting a real break. It is us each standing a little less deep in it than we would be.
Seen this way, is it more worth at least checking out?
AND, if I can't pay more without defeating the purpose, what are some ways I might help the owner save face on the deal?

Like the saying goes if you buy cheap you buy twice. If you already own units in my opinion keep them and bring them with you, unless they are inefficient and you plan to stay long enough that new ones would pay themselves off.
Don’t approach hotel owners to buy theirs because items not advertised for sale are more expensive than they are worth.
You will not find the price you are looking for and the price you would be offering probably doesn’t even cover a months rent and salaries so they won’t bother.

You are right. Air conditioners are the least of their worries.
Support the economy and keep spending as you did (or just a little more, to compensate for those who are on the brakes).

I wouldn't buy aircons from a hotel anyway. Most guests run them 24/7 so they get extremely heavy usage. Even if only 2 years old and even considering recent covid low occupancy a hotel aircon will have many miles on the clock
